First thing I would check is your exhaust. First drive it until its at operating temperature. Then with a glove or whatever slap your exhaust tips from side to side and up and down. If you duplicate that same sound you hear while your driving youe've found your problem!
Hopefully its just your exhaust and its in need of adjustment.
Good Luck!

I also hear a clunk once in a while when I hit the gas. I never thought of it being the spare though. It seems more like a control arm with play in it or maybe my driveshaft needs new U joints. I hope it's not the torque boxes. Let us know if you find out what it was. I'll do the same.

Kinda sounds like what i heard in my truck when i first bought it. It was caused by the gears not fitting just right and there would be backlash whenever I hit the gas. i just brought it to a shop to install new ones and it cleared it up. But check all the cheaper possibilities like a loose exhaust or anything else thats feeling alittle loose.

Check your driveshaft. I had a loud clunking a few weeks back, turned out my rear U joint was shot on my D/S, and by the time I recognized it, it had damaged my ring and pinion. Needless to say, a 180.00 aluminum driveshaft turned into a 500.00 rear end (of course I went with 3.73s, so the price was higher, but still...). Definitely have someone look at the driveshaft asap.

I have that issue, but mine is the bushings on the trailing arms. Mine are all dry rotted. They cause some play with the axle in terms of shifting or turning/twisting when braking/accelerating. You can also hear noises when you hit bumps just right, especially when not in the gas. I haven't been able to get mine replaced yet, but that's what's causing my issue.
