Clutch cable OK with 135k?

I have been reading up on replacing my clutch quadrant, and it seems the OEM cable is the best one. Mine currently has 135k on it (1990 Stang), and I am replacing the quadrant because of a clicking noise coming from it when I press the clutch pedal.

Is it worth replacing the cable at the same time with a new OEM one, or should my current one be fine?

I'd say its worth replacing. With 135K on it I'd say its done its job. If moneys tight then when you get things apart check it out real close for frays, scrapes or exhaust burns the best you can.
 
I also would replace it - it's under 50 bucks. This way you can keep your old one on the shelf in case an issue with the new cable should arise (it's nice to have an old spare IMHO).

Thanks for the quick responses, you guys are awesome.

It looks like I will probably go with the MM quadrant, adjuster, and "universal" ford clutch cable, unless you guys think the ford racing cable is a better choice.

I havent used the MM cable, so no comment.

You can read Jeremy Thompson's very informative article on clutch components.

I've run the Ford adjustable and non-adjustable cable and liked both. Diversified sells the non-adjustable cable for about 50 beans (shipped). Others have reported that Summit sells the same cable for cheaper - I cant verify that. I have the feeling that it's hard to go wrong with the MM cable if you wanna do one-stop-shopping.

Mine's fine with 175,000 miles -- that's both the stock cable and the stock plastic quadrant. I've had an SVO cable and quadrant that I picked up new in the box for $50 sitting on the shelf for 10 years now, and never felt the need to install it. Only on the second clutch too -- ammortized over all those miles the Centerforce Dual Friction was worth every penny.
 
I wouldn't see any need to replace my quadrant, except it's making a clicking noise, that makes me think it may break some time not too far down the line, and probably leave me stranded with my clutch engaged.

Speaking of centerforce dual friction clutches and being stranded, I had one in my '66 a few years ago. I went wide open through second, then put it into third and let the clutch out (not a power shift, wasn't on the gas much in 3rd), and ripped all the friction material off one side of the disc. Needless to say I haven't bought another centerforce clutch.

The clutch was installed by my friend who I purchased the engine+tranny from, so since I didn't install it myself, I can't swear he didn't screw something up. However it did work fine for 5,000 miles before it came apart. I wasn't too happy considering how much a dual friction costs.

Now I have a Ram PowerGrip (or something like that), which i'm not too happy with either, but it still works! :) It just engages really harshly sometimes, usually after it's pretty warm.

Sam, when the time comes (in 100K or so :) )............. I liked my old single hook SVO quadrant (and required Ford Adjustable cable) quite well.
