Clutch cable Question.....

Hey Everyone,

I have an 88 5.0 and Just changed out the clutch and all the related parts. I've not had the car long and it had a new UPR quadrant, FWA and cable all ready installed.

It's shifting real hard. Hard to get into gear when driving. I've searched and found possible answers as to why. I'll try adjusting the FWA some more tomorrow. right now it's adjusted so it's engaging when the pedal is about and inch or so off the floor. It doesn't seem like the clutch is dragging but I'm assuming you wouldn't always feel it if you were sitting at idle?

Reading all the post's during the search, alot of folks recommend only an original ford cable because the aftermarket ones are junk. My FWA is adjusted now so there is like 2 inches of room between the base and the nut. (normal?)

Anyway, my question is, the universal cable from Maximum Motorsports warns that you should buy theirs because it wont fit many other FWA's. Is there anyone using it with the UPR adjuster? I'd rather spend just the 60 bucks for a good cable since the quad and adjuster are all ready there.

Sorry for the newby question but I've been away from the hobby for awhile and I'm hoping this is an adjustment problem and not a need for a rebuild or replace.

Thanks for all the help......

Jeff

LOL well I have been down this path too. I ended up getting the MM kit, FWA and Quad along with their cable. It works great the only issue I had was the metal brace for the cable sisnt attach to the same place and the cable is longer than the stocker. I just left it alone and it works great. Its easier to shift than my stock setup 82 Capri!

MM A + on this kit!

I have the upr adjuster and a ford cable. Mine releases high not just off the floor so I do not have to push in as far to shift. My car shifts fast and easy. I have a new ford cable though the stock one from my 91 showed almost no wear when a took it off.

Figured I'd revive this thread as my questions are similar to the OPs. I did a search and a lot of people recommend the UPR Triple Hook and FWA. Has anyone purchased the MM kit and preferred UPRs Quad/FWA over MMs? Anybody have a problem with the universal OEM cable, and end up paying $150 for the OEM 82-93 5.0L cable?

I'm a bit confused with UPRs triple hook offerings, there's 3 or 4 designs. Extreme Triple Hook Quadrant, Billet Triple Hook Quadrant, Triple Hook Quadrant - Double Hook Upgrade Kit. What the heck one do I get, or are they functionally the same?
Also, do you guys prefer their Quick Click or Double Lock firewall adjuster?

What application is MMs 82-04 Ford Universal cable originally for? Sounds similar to the 79-81(IIRC) OEM clutch cable that people were recommending in older threads.

To me the triple hook seems like a level of adjustment you just don't need. I started w/ a Steeda quad, FWA, & cable. That worked well enough till the cable snapped. Now I have the complete MM kit w/ the stock non adjustable cable and it's smooth as silk. Been driving on it for about 10k miles now and have not had to adjust it once.

I hear what you're saying Prime Lord, simplicity is often the best course. You've got the $70dollar universal OEM cable, not the $140 5.0L OEM cable correct?
