clutch chatter?

so i just put in a new clutch and when i try to leave the garage the damn thing shakes horribly. i'm talking about the worst clutch chatter i've ever heard. the whole car shakes so bad that i don't even want to drive it.

my old clutch chattered a little (which i was told was a king cobra) and i put a new mongoose clutch in which is suppose to be identical to king cobra, you just didn't get the ford racing name with it (extra money).

what can cause chatter? i've been told that it only has to do with the material of clutch? anything else, this thing is driving me nuts.

plus i can't pull the car out because the damn left front wheel is rubbing the top part. i just put on 5 lug 03 cobra's on it and i have eibach pro kit. anybody run into this before or can tell me how to roll fenders?

Barring any contamination on the friction surface and the clutch being adjusted properly, I'd say just drive it and see if it gets better. Take it out on the road somewhere away from other traffic (if possible of course) and do a lot of various speed shifts up and down until it starts to develop a wear pattern. A clutch that's just recently started chattering that isn't doing it because of contamination can wear in and stop chattering with some easy shifts and driving gingerly.

Can we assume you had the flywheel machined before installing the new clutch??

if there was any contamination on the clutch is was very, very minimal. my next question is what is the best way to adjust the clutch i have bbk quad, adj cable and firewall adj? it seems when i unscrew the firewall it wants to screw it selft back in as soon as i let go of the adjuster.

yes i did, sad thing is the last time i just through my flywheel in and old clutch (king cobra supposedly) and the thing barely chatter every now and then.

this chatter is so bad if i were to take someone in the car for a spin and start to back out of my garage, they would question that my car is going to break down or say "dude something is totally wrong with your car".

If u have and adj cable adj the cable under car after u get it right use your firewall adj. to find the pedal height u like best. something is telling me your chatter is coming from a loose clutch cable reason being u are saying firewall adj. looses adjustment, without right cable tension u will get chatter

well i tighten the hell out of the bottom cable becuase it was popping off the quadrant before and then i had bad chatter and the clutch would not release untell about the same height as the brake pedal.

Right now i tightened the cable halfway underneath and and started spinning the firewall out about two turns from flush. as i turned the firewall adj out as soon as i let go the adjuster turns it self back in about a quarter to half a turn. is that normal or what?

Do u have the set screw on the back piece of firewall adj that holds it to the firewall?, cause i cant imagine how it can turn unless its turning the whole firewall adj. If u do have it srewed to the firewall then the only thing i can think of is the cable housing at the end by the firewall adj., is coming apart the reason why i say this is my cable was getting loose every 3 days so i would tighten cable under car in 3 days it would be loosening i figured the cable was breaking and stretching. Actually at the end in the firewall adj. exploded so when i tightened the cable most of the movement would be the wire belts of the cable housing going right out the end of the cable housing i couldn't believe it i never saw that before so i made sure the next cable i got had a design that looked like a nut was at the end to reinforce the housing. The one that broke was a steeda adj cable with no reinforment at the housing end.

i had a hard time getting the stock screw to start threading with the firewall adjuster. eventually it started and i got maybe one full turn on the screw. i'll check to see if the screw fell out later and will post a vid of it turning its back in. i don't think it did because i remember watching the screw only turn not the back part that sits up against the firewall

thats one i never heard before the firewall adj turning back out if the whole thing aint turning u might wanna take that cable out and see if the housing broke, atleast take it off the quadrant so u can pull the cable out to see the end of the housing at the firewall adj to see if it blew up? theres alot of people on this forum that really know their stuff hang in there im sure you will get the answer
