clutch help

hey guys.. to start off i know this is the 4.6L forum and i have a 3.8L and i know someone will tell me in a suggestion to get a clutch that is attached to a V8, which I agree with if I had the money to do right now but that is not the case. I wind up asking in here because every time i post in the V6 forum i get no help what so ever. There is more activity in a morgue then that thread.

So here is my question:

My 98 V6 with 190,000 just blew what I am most sure in the throw out bearing since i just put in a new cable and when I turn the car on I can't get into any gears. SO I am looking to purchase a clutch kit for my car. I know there are tons of options out there and I was just wondering if some of you could point me in a better direction than I am in now. There are no mods done to the car but I do have plans to put on some bolt on and maybe down the road a turbo or supercharger, but i may have a V8 vert by then.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Why bother spending money on a clutch kit that will hold over 400 ft lbs of torque when you have a V-6 mustang with less than 160 RWHP? Seriously dude WTF? You won't have the driveability or nice pedal feel of an OEM replacement clutch with some fancy aftermarket unit and at your power level it would be a pain in the ass to drive around with anyways.

Of course some of the RAM and Spec kids are good (I have a RAM HDX clutch in my car), but at your power level it is retarded to spend money on a clutch when an OEM unit is more than adequate. FWIW, the OEM clutch is probably good to at least 300-350 lb-ft of torque and you wouldn't see that kind of power out of your V-6 unless you were shoving 15-20 lbs of boost into it.

I have the spec stage 2, and it's considerably stiffer and as Nate said, not necessary.

Not a bad question to ask, but as you can see OEM will be your best choice.

hey i'm all for spending less money on the OEM.. I just didn't want to buy an OEM and be told down the road that i need to upgrade because of the hp..

Despite what is said, oem will do a damn good job. If you're worried, go with a king cobra setup from ford. Mine held 500+ HP damn well.

Stick with OEM clutch and throw out bearing. I went with a Hays and it had a ton of clutch chatter. What's more annoying is everyone who rides in your car has to ask why it's like that. Luckily my Hays went out and now I have an OEM 03 cobra clutch ready to go in. Don't forget to resurface or buy a new flywheel.

See if you can find a deal on the internet. I don't know who manufactures the Ford replacement clutch kit, but you can probably find that same clutch on the internet w/o the Ford name for a steal. For example, Rock Auto sells the SACHS OEM replacement clutch kit for around $150 (includes pressure plate, release bearing, disk, and install tool).

do not buy a spec clutch. ive driven three mustangs that had them and hated driving every one of them. its either on or off, no in between. its a lousy street clutch.

ok so here is yet another question.. I have been looking online for oem replacements and the two brands I keep running across are: Valeo, and Sachs. Does anyone have an opinion on either of these two? There is not much in the difference of price so i would rather get the better of the two instead of the cheaper of the two.. And would you guys recommend getting another flywheel instead of trying to re-use it. The flywheel has 190,000 on it and the dealership put a new throughout bearing in at 85,000 when i brought the car so i do not know if they already re-surfaced or cut it..

Sachs > Valeo IMO.

No reason to buy a new flywheel. Find a local machine shop that will resurface it for you. Some machine shops will just swap it out for like $60-$100 (they take your used flywheel, and give you another used resurfaced flywheel in return).

Just paid $40 to resurface my flywheel. It was checked like a mother***ker too.
