clutch, how do you know when...

since the engine is out I'm thinking maybe I should replace the clutch too. never done a clutch on a car, only bikes, so I don't know what I'm looking for as far as whether or not its worn out.

or do you only need to replace it if its broken?

Well, since it's out of the car already you can measure the clutch thinkness
and check that against the original. You should also check the flywheel and
pressure plate for any warping or burned spots. A clutch isn't that expensive
and if it was me and it was already out I'd just replace now. If you end up
having to replace it later you have to remove the tranny. Just my opinion.'

Of all the clutches I've done, I've never seen a clutch disc that completely wore the material down - the clutch is just slipping and thats why they were getting replaced. If you want to get an idea of how much life is left, just find out what the disc thickness spec is and measure your clutch when its out. You can also get a rough idea by seeing how far from the surface the rivets are. If its too close for comfort, replace it. If you have alot of hotspots or scoring, by all means replace it.
