clutch noise video

so this is what the clutch sounds like. notice the higher pitched noise, which is the sound that happens when i push in my clutch pedal..

listen for the crunchiness noise with hesitation. it crunches, goes quiet, crunches, goes quiet, and then shorter intervals of the two...

any ideas??

Sounds like a throw out/release bearing too me...

It does sound like a TOB bearing. They are a very common problem with these cars.

about the TOB, i took my cable off and attempted to spin the bearing with my hand, and it spun fine. so maybe that might not be it?

If you had the clutch adjusted too tight, the TOB will be constantly riding on the pressure plate fingers, which wears it out rather quickly. You want approx 1/4" space between the TOB and the pressure plate fingers when the clutch is fully released.

You say you can spin it freely, but how freely is the question?

If you can grab it and spin it with your hand without much effort and feel no free play it might be ok, but might have lost the grease packed inside due to heat from spinning.

If you can spin it with your fingers, the TOB is bad and must be replaced. When i say spin it with your fingers, I mean spinning in the sense of no resistance (should have some).

Also spinning with your hand, check if it makes any noise while spinning because it should be quite.

it makes a normal bearing-type noise i guess, like you can hear it kind of well. i used to skateboard a lot, and after a while the bearings would make a noise but they'd still be decent, but they made that louder noise as they were about to go bad.

so yeah, it does make noise, and it spins pretty freely.

so, since i can spin it easily with my hand, it's bad? there should be some resistance? like taking off, or as i'm letting the clutch out right when i'm getting into a different gear, it makes a shaky, almost banging , like something just isn't catching on some times, and it makes a somewhat hardcore bang-chatter noise. i'm not trying to over emphasize it, but i guess that is how you can describe it. not banging shaking the whole car banging, but like banging vibrations coming from the clutch, going into gear, and taking off from first.

reverse doesn't seem to be as bad, but it does it some times. i'll try to get a clearer video of the noise on here again...

does anybody notice the higher pitch noise? thats the noise that happens when i'm pushing the pedal in. any ideas of a possible cause of that or is that normal?

Is this a new clutch or is it stock original, I ask because maybe your Pressure plate is going bad. I had a fidanza 2.1 clutch that had a bad pressure plate when I bought it and it made weird engagement noises.

The banging you hear, is it when you push the clutch in and the engine is under load? I ask this because, with my car will make a very slight knocking noise when I start to go as in release the clutch, create a load on the engine and then push the clutch in very rapidly.

What I hear is the backlash or free play in the trans, u-joints and rear end being released all of a sudden, under pressure. My u-joints are original and have more then stock play and that is why my car makes more noise then it use too.

Check the driveline for excessive play and then I would look at the clutch system or rear end.

yeah my problem sounds sort of like yours, but what do you mean by knocking?

it isnt as harsh as a banging noise, but sometimes it really gets to be a nuisance vibrationy loud, knock i guess. maybe we have the same sort of problem. could you take a vid of yours?

What I mean is if i have the radio off and start to engage the clutch and add pre-load to the drive train under excessive load such as starting on a hill. When I release the clutch right after engaging, I can hear the u-joints in the drive shaft unload. Its hard to hear if you are not looking for it.

My noise only happens when on a steep incline or a place that adds excessive pressure on the drive shaft and only when I begin to start and quickly push the clutch right back in, nothing between shifts. Never happens unless i quickly engage/disengage the clutch.

You would not hear it on a video, as the sound travels up my MGW shift making it more pronounced, outside of the car, it can not be heard.


I would check your clutch pressure plate, like I said how many miles and how old is the clutch?
