So as posted in one of my other threads I had some noise when pushing clutch and while in neutral. Kind of a hiss/grind noise. Well the noise kept up and today out of no where it started screaming then smoking really bad. Could this be clutch or transmission? It makes screaming noise when I push clutch in, so Im pretty sure it is, but wonder if trans could be affected too. Im scared to drive it to shop or work or anything.

When I got car it was hard to put in gear, like it wont go, the guy had a quadrant clutch kit that he said he was gonna put on, but I got the car before he got to it. Anyway with all these symptoms I know clutch is shot, just scared trans may be affected for some reason. I dont know how far I can drive if should drive at all. I have road side assistants on ins.lol. I dont have tools, or know how to fix, or look at anything. Im actually learning a lot from this site and my haynes manual. Just hoping someone could give me some insight and better understanding. Thanks in advance

That sound you're hearing is the throwout bearing. The smoking? I'm not sure... How much is it, and when does that occur? I've had a throwout bearing disintegrate on me - when I pulled away the bellhousing the next day ball bearings fell all over my face. The bearing was in 3 or 4 different pieces, all meshed together with the bearing retainer on the input shaft. I replaced it with an FRPP replacement, along with a brand new clutch kit and steel bearing retainer - great investment. If you haven't already swapped out the quadrant with an aftermarket one, definitely do that. Especially with an aftermarket clutch, the stocker is on borrowed time.

Yea Ive got an aftermarket quadrant kit. It only occurred today. It was a good bit of smoke just when the screaming happened, it started coming in the car, but I pulled over cause it scared me turned car off popped hood just in case it was a fire. Drove it on home scared it was gonna lock up or not go in gear. The clutch just feels like He11 now. I looked on a site and it says around 500-800 to fix thats crazy

I've had a throwout bearing replaced by a shop before. It was there for exhaust work and the TOB was going anyway, so I paid to have it done. It was $200 from the local speed shop - out the door. That's just for labor, though. Figure in an extra $30 or $50 for the part.

That's ridiculous. My mechanic has never gone by the book. He knows how long it takes him to do his work, and he charges accordingly. He charges $200 straight labor for R&R of a T5. If putting in a TOB, no charge. If putting in a clutch, he charges an extra $50. He only charges $30 labor for a clutch cable, too.
