'90 Stang... will not engage into any gear.

Clutch cable works alright (stock quadrant) - car only starts with clutch pedal depressed / visual inspection shows clutch cable moving at tranny mount.

Problem is, You can move the shifter into any gear/gate with or without depressing the clutch pedal... yields nothing. Engine does even flinch.

I bought this girl with 115k on the clock - dunno if clutch was ever replaced, should I just suck it up and throw a new clutch plate in?

The shifter will gladly go into gear physically - minimal force. Engine on or off. As normal.

THe problem is that with the engine on, I can shift into gear and let the clutch completely out and NOTHING.

So the car doesn't move and the engine doesn't drop in RPM? Not even a little bit?

One of the roll pins inside the transmission on the shift rail might be broken so the transmission is not going realy going into gear. You would still feel shift pattern because the guide pattern and detent ball & spring are directly under the shifter in the tailhousing.

The clutch could be completely shot, but usually the rpms will at least drop a little. How tight is the clutch cable? Try pulling up on the clutch pedal. This releases the tension and lets the self-adjuster work.

The input shaft on your tranny may have said bye bye. Before you give up though, I would pull the clutch cable cover off the side of the trans. Have a buddy push the clutch pedal in while you physically watch to see if the TOB is engaging the clutch. I would take that route first. Good luck.

Yesterday I dad a friend play with the pedal while I was under her - the cable moves fine at the tranny. Which leads me to believe its not the cable or quadrant. I've kicked the pedal free as well, no gain.

I was thinking that the clutch could be down to the rivets, but as was pointed out above, the engine speed would still show some difference.

So, as I was afraid of... need a new tranny?

I think you would hear some noise that worn out, but expect the unexpected. Remove the cover and watch the action of the clutch fork, if it's moving and pressing on the TOB then it's not the linkage. If it's not, then you have a linkage problem, if it is then just pull the trans and bell housing, your going to have to anyways.
