Coast High, Roush, or Ford Cobra Engine??

Consider Ford Performance Solutions in CA. I chose them to build my 2nd 427w. CHP built my first.

Hey guys I'm trying to decide which motor I want to go with. Out these 3 (or another you might suggest) which would you go with...

Roush 427R motor

Coast High Performance 427W Cobra Classic

Contact DSS Racing too. The owner of DSS has been racing and building the SBF and Clevelands for over 30 years and knows his stuff. They have less overhead than the outfits you named and may comptete well on a price/quality matrix. At least they did for me.

I am not affiliated with them in any way, just a customer.

I looked and considered all of those, but in the end ordered from Keith Craft Racing. Here is a link to thier site, http://www.keithcraft.com/index.htm

I purchased the 331 stroker 450HP version. They were very flexible regarding camshaft selection and allowed me to supply specific parts I wanted to be used. I sent them a MSD ready to run dizzy, Cobra valave covers and oil pan, ARP bolt kits, March pulleys, and a Flowcooler water pump.

Here is a link to some photos of that engine in my car. I am very pleased with the results and the level of craftsmanship evident in the assembly.

A little side note on CHP.. Superformance in Costa Mesa, CA used to buy most of their engines from them for their cobra replica's. Then CHP got a new engine builder and Superformance started having problems with the engines. The comp. ratio's were way too high. They were advertising 10.0 and they were actually close to 13-14. I personally know a previous sales person for superformance and he told me of an occasion where he blew the freeze plugs out of a brand new motor while on a drive. He was saying the best he ever got one to run was on racing gas and huge timing adjustments, and even that didn't get the engine to were it should have been. Call Superformance direct and you can get this from the horses mouth. They now use Roush motors in the cobra repli's.

I 2nd FPS. I had all my machine work done on my 5.0 there. They are top notch and I've seen a couple of 427s on the floor in their shop. Give Troy a call at (714) 773-9027. They are located in Anaheim, CA.

Ive heard this as well about coast high

Well, I guess me and the people I know with CHP stuff are exceptions. I had them do somewhat of a shortblock and built the rest myself. I have 20k+ hard miles on it with no problems. No oil consumption, still have good pressures, etc. I would say you can't go wrong with most of the ones listed. I would try to use the one closest to you, just in case something goes wrong and you need to send it back.

EDIT: I did buy mine in 99 so if there have been changes to CHP since then disregard my post

How do you blow the freeze plugs out?

Unless the freeze plugs were poorly installed, the usual cause is high pressure in the water cooling jacket. A leaky head gasket can do that, but so can a fresh water pump and lots of RPM. That's part of the reason why Ford put screw-in core/freeze plugs in the Boss 302 engines.
