Cobra Disc Brakes on 67 Coupe

Hey all,

I have a 1967 Mustang Coupe. I am planning on buying the "caliper mounting brackets" from Mustang Steve to upgrade to disc brakes in the front. I also recently bought a 95' GT Mustang 8.8" rear end as I was told that it fits perfectly under the 1967 coupe, and I just need to have some spring perches welded on. I'm considering buying the cobra rotors and calipers for the rear too because there are kits where I can get all 4 rotors/calipers for a cheaper price. My question is whether the rear cobra disc brakes (11.65" rotors) will fit onto the 95' GT Mustang rearend or are there other parts that I will need to buy? I realize this question is probably better asked in another forum, but I also wanted to double check the information I had received about the 8.8" rear end fitting underneath my 67' without having to modify the axle lengths. Thanks in advance.

be careful of the SN95 rear end... they are supposedly 1.5" wider than the fox rears... the housings are the same, but the brakes put it wider.

please correct me if I am wrong.

I was told that the fox rears were the same length as 65-66 Mustangs and SN95 rears were the same length as 67-68 Mustangs. Atleast that seemed to be the consensus in the archives of this forum.

I was told to look for an 8.8 out of an '89-'93 mustang for my '66 Coupe, so I agree with you on that one.

that is correct the sn95 rear is supposed to fit I bought spring perches from comp engineering for 3" axle tubes I believe. the rear brakes from the cobra will fit actually it uses the same caliper the pads and the mounting bracket are different the cobra uses a wider rotor

Fox is suposedly same width as 67-68. SN 95 is wider

Also the axle tubes are 2-7/8" so make sure you get the right U bolts. You can use the 3" spring plates, but you need to be a very proficient welder.

That's the first i've heard about having to get new ubolts or spring plates. I'm not to familar with welding, so I was going to take it into a shop to have it done. I live about a hour away from Mustangs Plus, so any parts I need i'll be getting from them. As it seems i'm missing some parts, would ya mind giving me a short list of what i'd need. Thanks again for all the help.

There are a lot of reasons to use an 8.8, but there are good arguments for using a removeable carrier type too. Anyhow, if your primary reason for wanting an 8.8 with Cobra rear brakes is to balance out the Cobra fronts then I should mention the 12.19" rotors you can get that bolt up to 8s and 9s.

I agree there are some good arguments for a removeable carrier type however I think that a 0 mile rebuild of a 8.8" rear for $100 is hard to pass up. Especially since I wanted to upgrade to disc brakes because my drums are toast, and this will make the consumable easier to acquire when it comes time to replace items. Perhaps on the next build up, this one is going to be more of a daily driver than anything else.

I could not agree more, I sourced my 9 out of a '69 Cougar XR7 with a big block (could have been a 390 but I'm thinking it was a 428). Anyhow, I picked her up for $100 too. But I had to replace the ring and pinion, the diff (bought a soft-locker), and the axles (went with 31s instead of 28s). That was before buying the Wilwood discs too. All in all I am into mine for about $1.3K, or about half the price of buying one straight up from Currie.

In addition to welding on the spring perches, have them cut off the ears, they can interfere with your exhaust.
