I need help badly with a decision. Here's the story.

My 94 Cobra with 48,000mi sat in a barn for a little over a year with the upper, lower, valve covers, and a lot of what was on top of that removed for polishing. The job took much longer and when I took the car (towed) to a highly reputable engine Mustang shop in Cincinnati to put the engine back together (b/c mice stole the bolts out of the barn - at least that all I can come up with). They pulled the engine to examine it and it has a lot of rust damage on the heads, pistons and some other areas.

Here's are the proposal that I am getting from this shop.

1. Utilize the original engine and build a 347 Stroker with Trick Flow heads. Approx. $9000 ($1000 is currently invested in removal and inspection of current engine)

2. 5.0 Crate engine with 30# injectors. Here's what the estimate states: Intake UP/LW plus exhaust gaskets, oil and fuel filters, computer for crate engine and dynotune. $8000 ($1000 is currently invested in removal and inspection of current engine).

3. Clean up rust and put the engine back together: $6,000.

I have the pdf files that were sent as a fax to me that I am willing to send anyone for this advice.

The other option I have is that a local mechanic that s a client of mine offered to put a 5.0 Cobra engine from Jasper into my car for $4000.

Please help me, I feel like I'm screwed right now.

Those are some pretty high #s for crate motor? You can get something from FMS or Keith Craft from about 3200-5500 for low-medium end

I would contact Rick on this site and get him to build you a 347. I know it will be cheaper then 8g's.

Would a crate motor be a good option? Would that be putting out more power than my stock 302 Cobra?

Stay away from a Jasper engine. Not near the quality of "performance" builders.

Daggar has a link to Rick's site in his sig.

Get a 347 short block from CHP.
Install the heads and engine yourself. Save ton of money. It is not that hard to do.

Well apparently, I can screw up even the easiest of tasks...so I'm gonna have to have someone else install it.

I don't see how you could have that much rust damage that it would cost $6000 to repair. I have a feeling that this place is trying to get as much money out of you as possible because they are "highly reputable." I would suggest looking around to another shop to see what they say or try rebuilding it yourself. Just cleaning up rust shouldn't cost very much at all. You could buy a stroker kit and have the block machined for less than $6000. If you decide to just build another engine or buy a short block/crate motor you could always sell the cobra engine.

I guess I'm now thinking of a 347 crate since everyone is of the consensus that they are overpricing me. I also realize that even tho they are highly reputable...they arent the only guys that can put an engine in.

Anyone know of a good place to order a 347 crate?

Uh, how much did they disassemble this thing? Did they actually remove the rotating assembly or did they just pull the heads?
If just the heads, get out now, $1000 for that is outlandish.

I have seen motors that have been sitting for decades, with plenty of uglness all over. 75% of the time with these horrid motors, you fill the cylinders with oil every day for a week and let them bleed down, out the crap out of eveything for week. Then get out the breaker bar and turn the motor by the crank. After that you put it back in and treat it like you're breaking it in all over again. I've even seen people do the same with motors that locked up from overheating or other bad things that give me nightmares. My personal experience is with a 1971 240z (2.4 liter straight 6) that was given to me last year and had not run since 1988. 3 days of pb plaster and oil bathing, it was running the day after with no clanking or banging.

With your sitation of not even two years, in a barn, I'd be hard pressed to believe it's so bad you need a new motor/rebuild or $6000 worth of repairs.

I really believe they're taking you for a ride.
