Just wondering expirences with the explorer manifolds... which ones are we able to use... how much gains... what year explorer ect... erg... all that good stufff.... lol

dont use the lower.
its better than stock but not much...

the upper is great

The Explorer intake made my car go from 14.469sec to 14.103sec in the 1/4mile. It really pulls hard all the way to 6K rpm where the stocker fell on its face right at 5k rpm.

I am sure you can use any of the 5.0L Explorer intakes since the 94-95 Mustangs use an external EGR setup. Mine is from one of the later years ,98-01 I think, and has no internal EGR tube molded into the upper intake.

I dunno if you got a bad lemmon lower or what green but the lowers are about the exact same as any other gt40 lower (the EGR or non-EGR is the biggie). My lower was no were near what the stocker was...and the stock gt40 lower was about the same port opening as my ported gt lower.

Either internal or non-internal explorer gt40 will work. If its a v8 exploder then it has the gt40 sytle intake, its just if its internal EGR or non-internal EGR.

I have a non-EGR intake...I kinda wish it was an internal EGR one so I could to a fox t-body swap for cleaner looks. However, its not really that big of an issue.

Either one will work fine with your car.

I guess the EGR version is slightly more desirable IF you plan to sell it in the future Or plan to convert to a Fox style throttle body and want to keep the EGR functioning. Otherwise get either version.

Also, you will need an elbow adapter to attach the throttle body in the stock location.

Looks good thanks for the info guys... SOOOOO the non EGR intake manifold will work on our cars and the EGR will still be functional because its external? im leaving the 95 tb set up probally... i just wanna hit 13's and this looks like almost more bang for the $ over headers + h Pipe...


So i figure.... 3.73's, CAI, explorer manifold, Headers, H pipe, Clutch, and some driving skills might get me there... at least low 14's untill summer when i have $ for heads n cam

Hey blksn955.0 just wondering exactly what year that upper came off of, can you use the stock lower intake, are you running your egr and if so how, and are you running you stock throttle body and throttle cable?

Sorry for asking the questions again just want to clairify.

I bought it off someone else so I dont know the exact year. It is a non-internal EGR.

I run an elbow to keep the stock external EGR setup and stock T-body (for now will be going polished 70mm). WIth the elbow you just bolt on everything that was stock back up.

You cannot just use the upper on a stock lower, the ports are WAY different. You can use any gt40 upper though.

How does an internal EGR setup work?
Would you just plug your header opening?
If the intake really doesn't have egr isn't the car going to run crappy?

Any clearance problems with the stock hood and STB? I'm not familiar with the size differences between the stock and other intakes. And what's a good price for one of these? Are most of you finding them for sale in classifieds or are you finding them in junkyards?

1. We didn't say non-EGR. We said external and internal EGR.
2. 87-93 Fox Mustangs use an internal EGR setup. This means that molded into the upper intake is a tube that the exhaust gas fumes go through. Explorers and 94-95 Mustangs utilize an external EGR setup. Instead of a tube molded into the upper intake the exhaust gas goes directly into the air path behind the throttle body in the "elbow" of the upper intake.
3. You can remove the EGR system and that would mean you would have to plug the hole in the passanger side header and fooling or tuning the EEC-IV so you don't get a check engine light.
4. If the intake really doesn't have an EGR then the car will not run like crap. Many people here run without the EGR hooked up.

1. The stock hood does fit without problems. My hood blanket in getting a hole from one of the bolt heads but this is no big deal. The stock STB will not work. I just took my STB off as seen in the picture above.
2. For both upper and lower intakes between $100-$250 is about right.
3. Got mine off ebay. You can check local junkyards. Just ask for any Explorer running a 5.0L engine. 96-01 Explorers I think is the range of years they ran the 5.0L.

how can you tell weither or not its internal or external... Whats easiest to use and keep stock EGR set up im in NJ and need it for emissions... does the 97-98 esplorers have internal or external egr... if the manifold i buy has internal egr can you block the port and continue to use extrenal egr...

Doesn't matter which one you get. The elbow adapter that you have to get is where the EGR mounts to. The elbow adapter blocks the tube on all upper intakes that have the internal EGR tube. This includes all Ford and afterrmarket brand intakes. I passed emissions with no problems.

sorry, I think I may be to blame for the non-EGR confusion. I meant non-internal EGR.

The upper and lower both have EGR passages and the non-internal ones do not have the hole in the center of the lower intake that is the EGR passage.

Like said with the elbow you can run either internal or external, the elbow blocks off the internal passages on the uppers at the T-body mount location.

To tell quickly if its internal or not, on the face of the intake T-body opening you will see either a flat smooth surface with no "lines" or openings going around the t-body opening hole OR you will see these lines. Also the center hole in the lower.
