Cobra Gt-40 NOT P...casting # #F1ZE AA

I have a chance to get some Cobra Gt-40 heads NOT THE P..and the casting # on the heads are #F1ZE AA...they are used

so my question is should I pick those up, or should I just wait to get some Edelbrock or Trickflow heads

They are selling the Cobra heads for $400....so If I buy Edelbrock Alum, they are only $800...so Im just curious if the Cobra heads are worth that

Also forgot to mention they are ported on intake and exhaust side::

so far I have a Trick flow street intake, w/ full exhaust..and soon getting a tb and a bigger maf once I get some heads...

thats a good deal on either one , personally I would get the cast irons if they are new or freshened up , but if they are used and the edelbrocks are new go for the edelbrocks .....IMO....

F1ZE AA are stock Mustang GT heads "Not GT-40" I just sold a pair on ebay for $20 there worth less than they are the price to ship.

umm ray I am looking at a speedpro cylinderhead casting number interchange and it shows that casting number (F1ZE-AA) to be 93-95 cobra (62.1 cc combustion chamber) and 96-97 explorer GT40 (64.9cc combustion chamber) and F77E-AA to be the GT40P on 98 and later explorers (59.8cc combustion chamber)

look for three horizontal bars on the front or rear of the head. This will designate it as a gt40.

$400 is iffy. If they did their port work well, then it should be worth it, they're decent heads.

if I do buy those gt-40 heads, will my trick flow street intake work good w/ those heads...i really dont want the cobra intake...but if the cobra works best I guess I will have to sell my tfs....any suggestions????

That's odd then because that's what came on my 93 GT.

well your car must have had the engine or heads replaced before because I have one of the last 93s ever built (8/23/93 build date) and just pulled the E7s off of it last week ......so I dont think your car would have been any different ........do you recall if they had the 4 bars on them ????

Maybe I am mistaken, I thought GT-40P were stamped guess not.

I just sold a pair of F1ZE and they were for sure GT-40 heads. In my findings, the cast iron is just heavier and will give you great performance especially if they are ported out. The aluminum is just lighter or may have bigger valves which means you will have to fly cut your pistons. I like the cast iron on a stock block and you can put any intake on that you want. BTW E7TE is the stock casting for GT 302 heads.

GT 40P heads do not look like Cobra heads. They are stamped with a P some where on there. I just can't think of where it is because I would never get a set and never payed attention.

look at the flange near the front header flange. The GT40 heads will have "GT" cast in there and the GT40P heads will have "GTP" cast in there. Also the GT40 have 3 bars on the front of the head and the P heads have 4 bars.

gt40 heads pictured here, as stated, if they were p's, they'd have the p.

this is an explorer engine my bro and I are building for his notch

three bars on the heads for gt40's, 4 for gt40 p heads

I have one set of FRPP GT40 heads and one set of 93 Lightning truck GT40 heads, both have the 3 bars on the end of the head. Front on drivers side. as installed. If you can, measure the valve heads, as I did. They will have at least the 1.84/1.54 valves. Some may have 1/2 in headbolt holes as both of mine did. A stock Cobra set may have the 5.0 7/16 size.

I think they are worth having, if you can get them right. There has been a set advertised here for the last month as freshly machined, $450, in the local advertiser. They were a big step up from my stock heads.

just bought the gt-40 cobra heads....questions want to get new springs and rockers so::

what valve springs should I get...

also what rockers do i need (1.6) but what kind of mount, pedistal or what?? and should I go for the alum. ones??

and what cam is right for these heads? frpp or a custom one?? want a lumpy sounding one....where I live theres NO emmisions

and is it a good idea to get a 190 fuel pump and 24# injectors and if so do I need a new fuel rail

and tb=65mm or 70mm and maf=?? (not doing s/c or turbo or nitrous!)

edelbrock makes some good stock replacement springs , and the stock rockers are good , B303 motorsport cam has some hit to it .....IMO ......trickflows got some good replacement springs too but they are kinda little more pricey .......

F1ZE-AA heads ARE Gt-40 heads. They were developed in 1991 for marine applications. I do not beleive they have provisions for smog on them.

True 93 Cobra heads have the F3ZE part number and 94-95 Cobra heads got the F4ZE part number.

The F1ZE head was later used on the 96-97 Explorer since i beleive the EGR was external.

More then likely...they came off a 96-97 Explorer before the change to GT-40P's in late 1997. I bet if you look around on the head you'll find "96" or "97" casting dates in them

E7 heads came on the standard 5.0 HO all the way up to 1995.
