Cobra stock or supercharge debate...

:D Ladies & Gents -

Thanks for running such a great site for Mustang lovers.
I finally broke down after several years of not being able to find a notchback to my liking and pricerange and found a 1995 Cobra Convert.

I know, I know, maybe not the best choice because they were only made for two years (the 1994 and 1995 5.0 that is), but I have always liked the cars and really wanted a 5.0. I found a convert 5.0L, cherry shape, 5speed, cobra at a local dealer, only 50K so I snapped it up. I love the car, it's really nice and has decent power for a stocker. Too bad too many foreign car drivers want a piece of it on the highway...

Anyway, my question is this (and it's sort of two-fold):
a) what is everyone's opinion about keeping this car stock, for value sake and for posterity sake. I have the SVT certificate and it says the car is number 3hundred something out of 1003 (?) that year. So great, I have a one of a thousand something car. I want to drive the thing and not disable it in a museum, so is there anything I am missing about this being an SVT from that year in not wanting to change the character of the car.

I am really only thinking of doing a few things to it, not tubbing it and making a full bracket racer out of it or anything, but just to make it a little more fun to drive and really give AMGs and punks in Civics nightmares.

b) The first thing I want to do to the car is supercharge it. But I have no idea which one. I searched and searched online and they all seem to have +/- for their particular applications, but I have no idea which ones work with 95s. I have also heard that computer wise, the EECIV (?) is pain in the butt to deal wtih when it coems to power adders etc.

Any advice on either A and B would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance all!

my car is far from cherry, i bought it last year and with the stock longblock went 12.9s. i wanted to go faster, but didnt want to change the top end since that was what a cobra is from our years. the car had a turbo, i ran a 150 kit and just recently bolted up a vortech. well, the shortblock had enough and gave out on me. i was thinking about going with a different top end, but i think it takes away from it being a cobra. so i am just putting another stock block in it and running it. im personally keeping my stock top end on it for a bit longer.

My opinion on A is, it's your car - do whatever you want to it. I think you'll get the same opinion from most of the people here. Also, I personally don't believe in daily drivers - all cars should be driven.

As for B, Vortec has a nice kit for the 94-95 5.0. They seem to be more reliable overall. It's true the EEC for the 94-95 is less forgiving than the 86-93 EEC, but you can get a chip burned that plugs into the EEC. The chip overrides the stock settings in the EEC and lets it work with whatever you've added to the engine. You can even replace the EEC with an aftermarket kit that lets you do the tuning yourself.

You have a lot of options, so it mostly depends on what kind of power you want and how much money you want to spend. I'm sure others will chime in and give you their opinions on superchargers.

Welcome to the boards. Powerdyne, Vortec, Procharger, Kenne Bell, etc all make supercharger kits for 94-95 Mustangs that are emissions friendly. Most have some sort of chip that will let the car run with its product. There is also a couple turbo kits out there. But, I am pretty sure that the turbo kits negate the smog equipment on your car. So, no emissions will pass if that matters to you. Also, there are a few different ways to tune the EEC-IV in our cars. Tweecer, PMS, and others allow you to self tune if you are ambitious enough to learn how.

As for keeping your car stock for value. Well, you can always put the stock parts back on.

Based on experience and tuning we've done, my first choice would be to find a good used Incon turbo kit for it. No other turbo kits even come close to the reliability, fitment and power these kits made. Second choice would be a Vortech SC and third would be a Kenne Bell 220 with a Flowzilla. Those would be the only choices I'd consider. I'd NOT do an FMU setup, but instead get a 90mm Lightning MAF and 42# injectors from www.buyfordracing.com You'd also need a Walbro 255 fuel pump. Get a dynotune locally if you can from a good tuner. Or if there are none near you get a wideband and a mail order chip from someone that'd work with you in getiing it dialed in correctly (like us).

A.) My opinion....1 of 1,000 isn't THAT rare. It maybe a cobra but it's not a cobra R. Mod the crap out of it and don't look back.

B.) If i was going to get a supercharger, i would be looking into Prochargers, because they are the only ones that come with an intercooler. All the other centrifugal ones don't. There isn't enough room for the tubing when the head unit is mounted on the right side of the engine.
When it comes to tuning, take it to someone who knows what they are doing, then go from there. Best to start out with a good base tune.

Welcome to stangnet. Put up some pictures.
