Codes 35 and 85

I had a small engine fire, but got everything going good. Only thing, was I needed a upper/lower gasket. I used rtv, but it seemed like I had a leak, so tonight I put the right gasket on. Well, now my CEL is on, pulling codes 35 and 85. 35 has to do with the EGR sensor I think, and that is one new item I just put on, and it wasn't doing it before I put the gasket on anyways. What could cause it by just putting on an upper/lower gasket, which is seated properly I might add?? Also, what is 85? Any ideas appreciated.

yep, i would recheck the EGR and EVP. make sure the lines are on, and elec connections are good. there are more ways to troubleshoot the EGR if you want to know.

i thought code 85 was for 4 bangers. are you sure that is right?

My code book says:

85
Cannister Purge(CANP)
solenoid-circuit failure.
or,
Transaxle problem - 3/4 shift
solenoid-circuit failure.
or,
Electronic Control Assembly
(ECA) status-adaptive
"lean" limit reached in fuel
control program

First one won't throw a light.. If you got a manual it ain't the second one obviously (also shouldn't shoot the light)... The third one should throw a Check Engine light I'm sure. Yes putting a intake gasket on could do this. I believe it's not sealed and causing a leak, thus sucking in non metered air and making the lean code shoot on... Thank god for EFI huh??

Code 35 EVR - EVP sensor signal is/was high – Bad sensor, or possible missing ground for EVR circuit. With the power off, measure the resistance between the black wire and battery ground. You should see less than 1 ohm. Check the same black wire on the EGR and MAP sensor. More than 1 ohm there and the wire is probably broken in the harness between the engine and the computer. The 10 pin connectors pass the black wire back to the computer, and can cause problems.

I should mention, I have the smog pump and air box removed. When I start my car, I can see the diaphram in the EGR opening and closing, and the idle surges accordingly. Like I said I have a new sensor on the EGR. Could this mean the EGR is bad? My wife's GT stays closed when started. Thanks peeps.

Go back and do the basic checks in my previous post rather than guessing. It will save you time and money. The EGR sensor ground is high on the probability list of broken things.

Replaced EGR, problem solved. I had replaced the EGR sensor previously, to no avail. Thanks jrichker.
