coil overs or struts

what is better for a street set up? coil overs or struts and shocks?

I'd say struts, coil overs are generally going to give you a really stiff race feel, you don't need the amount of tuning coil overs give you for a street car either. All the ricers rave over coil overs and think they're the best for every car cause they have crappy engines and need to make their cars seem cool somehow

I've heard that coil overs ride, handle better and is an overall improvement. The only thing I'm not to sure about is that all of the weight of the car is now being held up by the strut towers, which arent that great to begin with. In stock form the weight is held up by the springs that are under the K-member and the subframe; I might use them in a weekend driver, but not a DD.

troof, I didnt think about it that way, but yeah, all the weight would be supported by the strut towers. alrighty then springs/struts it is.

new question then, whats a good aftermarket spring?

Weight is supported by the towers, however they are more than strong enough.

I love my coilovers. I do alot more driving in the twisties so they are warranted. however the car is my daily. you really cant go wrong either way, just depends on how much you want to spend. one of my favorite aspects of the coilovers ( all though its a small one) is that its alot easier to change springs in the front. also on a side note i havent had any problems with my strut towers handling the weight.

if you are looking for a good strut spring combo though, I'm a fan of Bilstein socks struts//hr springs. koni yellows are also a great shock to go with. On a side note, I do not at all agree with coilovers being " ricer" or compensation for a crappy motor. comments like that are pure ignorance

Every import friend I have think the ONLY way to have a good suspension is to have full coil overs, my comment isn't ignorant at all, it's 100% experience from about 12 different people with imports from hondas to bmws. And like Liquid said, the strut towers support the weight of coil overs, so from my experience with about 5 or 6 different cars that had coil overs, you feel the road a lot more through the body of the car. I've never be concerned with the towers not supporting the weight....just you feel the road through them more. So before anyone else flames without reason, that's my experience and opinion like was asked for in the first place

Coil overs will handle better but the ride will not be as comfortable. It is all sacrifice so it really depends on what you want out of a DD. By moving the the force to the spindle the shock/spring will react much faster than the the typical spring/strut setup. The shock towers are plenty strong but the stock CC plates are not up to the job IMO. I would replace those with the MM ones at the same time. One thing people run into issues with is tire clearance with a coilover setup. I have an 8 inch front and mine barely clear. Bilsteins are typically a fatter strut so that combined with the spring and such with a 8inch or more wide(245) may give you clearance issues.
