Coil Spring Compressor

I will be working on the suspension real soon and plan on replacing the coil springs. So I'm going to use a spring compressor to get the old ones out and the new ones in. My question is when I get the old ones out, what is the safest way to release the tension on the compressor without shooting the coil spring across the garage?

It's pretty straight forward... you compress the spring with the tool you are talking about using a socket and extension. Once the spring comes out, you release the tension by loosening the bolt.

You can see the spring compressor in the below picture (bottom right hand corner); they latch on pretty good to the spring when they are compressed.
