I have an 88 5.0 coupe and im installing eibach sprngs and kyb shocks. Iv been told that i need a spring compressor for the front. There is a rental place near by but the rent out 2 types of automotive spring compressors, ("coil spring compressor") that is put inside the spring and compresses or >> ("strut spring compressor) that is used on the outside of the spring. What one do i use??

Thankz

The external ones work fine, I've been using them on Foxes for years with no trouble. The fastest way is with a 2'+ prybar, slid through the coils so when it pops out it can't go flying- it just slides down the bar. Kinda scary the first time, but now that I'm used to it and understand what's happening I'm more nervous with spring compressors.

Get the external one so you can remove it after installing the spring. It will work just fine....

since youre doing to struts at the same time just pull the strut out and lower the control arm down slowly...it should lower enough to get the spring out. you might need to take the tie rod off but it should come out.

Take it from me, screw the compressor. Put the spring back in, like said above, jam a prybar in to keep it in the cups and jack up the control arm. It will eventually pop in. I literally spent hours trying to get the POS spring compressor to work.

I installed mine with a floor jack......very dangerous if you're not careful.

I have never used a spring compressor. I just use a ratchet tie down through the bottom of the a-arm and coil spring to keep it from flying out when removing the stockers. Usually aftermakets are short enough to easily get in with a pry bar and floor jack.
