My 15 year old son keeps saying I should get cold air intake ... can someone please tell me what that would do for my stang and what kind would be best?

Thanks ... I really appreciate how helpful everyone is!!

Just get a k&n and remove the silencer in the fender. This will work fine..

99% of the CAI out there are just looks and in some cases cost you power..

does your son like fast and the furious? j/k

lots of controversy over CAI's. i made a homemade one before and i didnt feel a difference. i put my stock setup back on and the car was more response than before. turbulance and more distance between the filter and the sensor will cause bad readings on the maf.

i personally have a chrome inlet tube with stock airbox and K&N and have no problems with it at all. car runs better than my stock tube. its my opinion that the air is moving too fast to be affected by the warmer temps of the metal tubing.

what do you think the FIPK is???? a cold air intake!!

anywhoo...yes you will feel an immediate change in your throttle response. It is usually much smoother.

Now, if you're talking about cold air intakes that go into the fenderwell...then that is pointless. It adds another bend and will end up costing you power.

The best CAI's are the ones with one bend (to the TB) and have a heat sheild to protect from engine heat. The poor ones have two bends (Fender well, then to TB)...

Actually, it's not, really. The airfilter is placed in the engine bay and does not even extend into the fenderwell where the factory puts the silencer. "Cold" air, to me, implies getting air from somewhere other than the engine bay and while the FIPK-II has a sheetmetal separator, it's not hermetic meaning engine-bay air will still get to the filter.

The FIPK gains from (a) the large K&N filter, (b) the airflow smoother flange that the filter mounts to and (c) the smoother path through its ducting to the TB.

The FIPK-II was my first mod and on the dyno it picked up a bit over 9rwHP, going from 228 to 237.

it still out performs any fenderwell CAI out there. sealed or not, that heat sheild does provide enough to keep the ambient temps down.

I view any CAI as one that attempts to provide colder air into the TB...so I see a fenderwell design and one with a sheild as being the same.

Either way, the throttle response is well worth it!!

The fastest NA's run an open filter with no shields. I'm running a no silencer, K&N drop in, and a densecharger tube.

FACTS:

The engine bay air temperature is only 2-5 degrees warmer than the fenderwell temperature, once you go over 20 mph. That's worth what? A quarter of a HP?

I can't say much about the extra bend issue. I never checked that out myself.

The filter in the fender is a pain in the ass to check and clean compared to the engine bay mounted ones.

GIVE ME A BREAK DTMACH1. I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU COULD NOT REALIZE I WAS REFERING TO A CAI THAT EXTENDS INTO THE INNER FENDER WELL!!!

All it will do is make your pockets lighter for something that's little more than a pretty engine dressup piece

The idea behind it is sound. Cold air is denser, which means that there is more air per cubic inch. Now, whether or not the kits out there are doing this is up to debate.

hey hauoli63, in case u couldnt tell you kinda struck a nerve here with some people, they are mostly for looks, im gonna get a K&N fipk (fuel injection performance kit) its mostly for looks and it may give 3-5 hp but i like the way it looks so im gonna get one regardless, boils down to if u want a couple hp and good looks for a couple hundred bucks, your call

I have the MAC Straightshot... I think the only thing that made a power difference is the MAF Meter. But I like for the engine bay to look nice as well.

All in all - The HP gains are not going to be noticed (minimal even if they are) so it's basically a cosmetic upgrade, unless you have 1000's of HP where a little turbulance and warmer temps will make a big difference.

I agree with SVTStang03. The power increase would be noticeable with other mods. Increase intake side of motor, more air needed etc., etc.

I have just recieved the MAC straight shot. Very nice dress up to the motor, simple install and with future mods will see some performance gain.

Show and Go: It's all interlinked.

cai is just for show, I bought the densecharger because it was supposed to be the best out there and it didnt do a damn thing, some guy on here actually dynoed 1hp less with the densecharger I think. If I were to do it again I would just get a K&N and drop it in, save the extra 100 bucks for a better mod.

Thanks for all the help! Don't know if I'll do it, but just had to check since my son thinks he knows everything and I know that I know next to nothing! And, yes, my son does like Fast and Furious ... and he doesn't much care for the mustang! He wanted a stang before we bought this one, but says we ruined it for him by buying it for ourselves. Now that he sees "old" people driving it, he doesn't want one for himself. His loss!

Pardon me for not getting it BUT you have headers, xpipe, chip, dyno#s and you dont know the principles of CAI.
