so i've been looking to install xfi spr modular street cams on my gt (part#127300 incase anyone is looking at the website) but i was wondering what everyone thinks of them and would you recommend installing aftermarket cams? they claim to gain 40hp over stock. just wondering if my money would be better spent elsewhere?keep in mind my car is stock except for the slp loudmouths and i kno i need to upgrade the springs and tune the car which i was planning on purchasing the sct livewire as well but i wanted to hear from all of you. thanks in advance

Personally, I'd wait for cams last, if I even did them. I mean, there are a LOT of mods you've got left to do that are much easier than that. First off, get a Xcal3 or Livewire from VMPTuning.com and a C&L Racer with a 88mm maf tube. Justin can get you both of these. I've had amazing results with this combo and his tuning. Next would be to get a set of UDPS and CMCVs. I'm getting great results from this combo.

I personally think the cams offer great hp gains for the money, and am eyeing them for my GT. If you want the best gains for the money, I believe a supercharger is the way to go, but I may be biased in my opinion.

As already stated, you might as well do these last. How much power you get from cams will depend on other bolt on's like LT headers, CMDP's, CAI. I would do the cams after all the bolt on's then have the car zero'd in on a dyno. You're probably going to lose some low end power, so some 4.10 gears may be a good idea too.

Or you could just skip a lot of steps and throw a blower on it.

I'm still looking at cams and are considering either FRPP or a couple of different sets from comp.

It's funny how all the FRPP hot rod cam threads have died in recent weeks. Either the power numbers are depressing or the price quotes for labor are scaring people away. I've gotten some pretty depressing price quotes myself for the installation of the FRRP NSR cams.

Yeah, I'm all for chancing the cams, but you have a lot of other things I'd do first, like UDPs, longtubes, gears, suspension stuff, etc.

On a side note, I wish some of the people being scared off of cams by the install price were near me, I'd set up a side business doing it haha. That motor don't scare me at all...

Cams are relatively easy to change in these cars, too ... I guess it's because it's "new", they figure they can rape everyone on the price. Just like all of the long tube header mfgs.

A few months, I helped on a cam install on a '07 GT with three other guys and took us just under four hours from start to the end of cleanup. None of us had swapped cams in any vehicle before. He did have all the right tools for the job and also had copied the entire section on cams from the FORD shop manual. I feel very confident to tackle the job with his help sometime early next year

Gonna do a P&P heads with cams at some point, I think it's best to just do both at once since you can easily replace the springs then as well and the power gains are best then. Waiting for a new intake to come out before then, to match the flow of the new heads. See how that all turns out over the next few months.

I've gotten quotes of $650, $1,000, and a refusal to even give a quote. The $650 quote is from a speed shop and the other 2 are from Ford dealerships in my area. Those quotes are for the NSR hot rod cams. I would hate to see a quote for a cam/spring swap.

The dealerships don't want to fool with it because it's not something that they do on a routine basis. Both told me they've never had to work on the first 3v 4.6 valve train.

first off let me thank everyone for your input and say im sorry i havent had time to check the forum recently, well until today. yes i agree that i have much easier bolt ons to install before i need cams. but i was also wondering what everyone thinks of these new cams. should i wait until more companies make performance cams for the car?
i'm not worried about the installation since i can do that on my own plus i work for a ford dealership so i have access to any and all info on the motor. not to metion an employee discount on parts and service but i don't see why i couldn't install them at home. winters coming and its going to get to be very difficult to drive the stang in deep snow or icey conditions. so even if i don't finish it in one day the car can sit for a week or two. i agree that they are asking way too much for cams just cause they are new. thanks for all the info and im going wait on the cams for awhile and go with more bolt ons. props on the install photos

127300's are Stage II VSR's, not SPR's.

These are the same cams I run, and I would also suggest doing the swap with a set of Livernois heads

Not much idle change over stock, and very streetable.

With C&L cold air intake, bbk shorty headers, xpipe and mac muffler, I went from stock 278 to 300hp. after adding the stage II cams and springs, I went to 322hp (but lost 9ftlbs of torque!). After putting in JBA longtubes and o/r hpipe plus steeda underdrive pullies, I'm now at 348hp and pushing decent times at the track. Fantastic idle too:

Install prices are running between $300 and $450 for NSR cams and the power gains on the FRPPs have consistently been higher than advertised.

A guy I know with a Whipple was somewhere around 525rwhp before the cams, and the tuner had to reel the tune back in to keep it there, so it appears that they are good with boost as well. The tuning with the Hot Rods and the Whipple is a nightmare from what the tuner told me though.

The owner of the car told me he is 90% satisfied with the driveability at this point but has decided not to mess with it since he is building a motor this winter. Right now the car is a time bomb!
