Confused over mufflers

Right now i'm running a completely stock exhaust from the headers down which i believe to be 1 1/4". By tomorow i'll be ordering some mufflers (most likely dynomax bullet race mufflers). I would like to keep everything open or versitile for adding an x-pipe or o/r h-pipe. Wouldn't you want 1 1/2" or larger for both the midpipe and the muffler?

I don't want to buy mufflers with an 1 1/4" input/output to have to later buy another set of mufflers that are 1 1/2" to match it up with a new midpipe later on down the road.

Also, what is the difference in sound between a 12" muffler and an 18"? Would the 12" be louder since there is less available space?

whew...lil off . stock exhaust is 2.25" all the way back. i dont think the length of the muffler will matter too much, it is what it is made out of and the design of the inside is what will make the tone and loudness.

Stock exhaust should be 2 1/4. Aftermarket 2 1/2.
I went with 2 1/4 replacement mufflers when I bought weld ins. However I stress that you save your money for a good 2 1/2 inch cat-back and H or X pipe.. The benifits you'll reap are far better than a set of weld ins which give you near nothing but a change in sound.

So you sayin i'll have to get everything from the headers back (not including headers yet) 2 1/2" in order to be able to combine my "mufflers to be" with the the rest of the exhaust? Or can i rig something up so i can hook up 2 1/2" input/output mufflers to my stock system?

You can put 2 1/2 inch mufflers on your current setup.
What I'm saying is why do it.. I've done it.. Just save your money and get a full 2 1/2 inch catback.. don't do the weld ins.. they just rust off anyway.

And a 2 1/2 inch catback will bolt up to your current 2 1/4 H Pipe.. But when you change that.. go with 2 1/2 as well.

well just to be different here, i welded in a set of used flows about 2 years back. i couldnt justify spending $250+ on a catback when i could get 2 mufflers and have them welded in for under $60 and have it sound pretty good for a completely stock car. i still have the stock catback on my car right now. it will come off sooner or later but i think that money can easily go somewhere else on the car for far better hp but then again, thats just my opinion

HazMat has a point there.. but the salt in the winter in this area eats welds alive.. I spent more stopping leaks than I would had I just bought a cat-back... things to think about.

Just buy the mufflers and have the local muffler shop make the tailpipes to match. It will be way cheaper than the catback, plus you know it will fit right. I think I paid $125 for the piping and install on my flows. Anywho, a larger muffler will always be quieter. Good luck!

hehe...i live right near chicago. i think our winters are a lil worse . my headers, hpipe (well its starting to finally) and my catback are so rusted that its not even funny. i personally can care less but i know some people do

With no more mods than you have, weld in some mufflers and be happy. You will not see any gains from a catback. I can tell you that from experience. I put in a Dynomax 2.5in ultraflo and a Mac o/r x pipe and wish I would have just welded in some mufflers and put in an o/r h pipe. Don't get me wrong, I love my setup and I did get power gains but it cost me $600. Go the cheap route and I think you will get just as much for alot less money. By the way, I have always used Dynomax and I love them!!!!
