I was looking at AFS Wheels and their tire and wheel packages. I contacted them through email asking if they would substitute 245/255 for 235/275 tires. Their response was that 275s would not fit on a 4 lug rim. I dont understand that. I thought that the tire size depended on the width of the rim. From reading peoples sigs and other post it seems like 275 should be fine for a 17x9 rim. What gives?

If they are that dumb I sure would not order rims from them.

wow that's an interesting answer lol. I think I would call back and talk to someone else. Make sure you have the proper backspacing to fit a 17x9 wheel w/ 275's out back. I'm sure you've searched and read about that.

What the hell does the rim having 4 lugs have anything to do with it. If it were me I would go somewhere else. I can imagine the answer I would get if I had a real tech question for them.

P.S.
I have 275 on stock turbine wheels, I must be special

The backspacing for the 17x8 is 4.95" and the 17x9 is 5.95". I would also get a 1/4" wheel spacer for the rear. Would the 275 fit with that backspacing and the spacer?

You can't compare the same with tire with a different size wheel. And it also all depends on the sidewall height. The typical 275 that is too big for a 15" wheel is a lot easier to mount than a 275 that is too big for a 17" wheel.

That may be true, but the thing is that (he says) they're telling him that the tire will not fit on the wheel specifically because it's a 4-lug wheel. We all know the lug/bolt pattern has absolutely nothing to do w/ the size of tires that will fit on the given wheel.

I would assume a 275/50 would fit fine on a 17x9 wheel given that it's only 2 inches of "bulge."

So I should be fine with the backspacing and the spacer for the 275 tire?

Oh I agree that a 275/40/17 looks and fits really well on a 17x9 wheel.....I don't know why they told him otherwise.

I'm sure they meant the 4-lug rim you are asking about -- but poor communication is just as bad as the wrong answer.

I think what they mean is 275 wont fit on a stock 4 bolt mustang with out some type of mod. (quad shocks, rolling fender lip) Im sure they get a lot of people trying to return tires cause they dont fit.

I bought my wheels from AFS and I'm running 275's 17 x 9 in the rear. Sounds like you just got some woman...or a moron.

That's funny. I have another thread that I started about what size tires and brand, so I think I might actually go 265 now just for better fit, but its not in stone

Yeah same thing happens when you call summit racing, you get some stupid girl and when you ask them a question, they put you on hold, then you finally get someone worth talking to.

If you go with the 275/40's then you'll have stock tire diameter.....so your speedo won't be off.

I think they were advising you against going 275 vs 245 ...

Perhaps some people called back about rub issues on the e-brake cable and/or fender lip etc while under heavy cornering (the axle shifting from side to side) .... like the winding hill that leads up to my palace.

But the 265s are very similar in diameter to the 275s. Would it be a big problem for the speedo if I do 265. Kumhousa.com has a chart for each of their wheels and one of the rows has diameter. The 265/40 is 25.4 and the 275/40 is 25.7.

After I asked them about the initial response I got from them they finally got back to me. They said that their 4 lug wheels are for 87-93 Mustangs and a 275 tire would normally not have room.
