At the risk of sounding like a noob, I'll just go ahead and ask.

Do the different colors of connectors on Ford cars have a specific meaning? I imagine the size of the connector, i.e. the number of wires involved, does but I've found a variety of colors on the 86 GT. Most are grey or black but there is one single wire blue connector I will soon need. Hatch release.
The EVTM and other Ford books list maybe five colors. Just curious.
Thanks all.

I dont know enough myself to say that the color of the connector means much. More important than the connector color is the wire color or colors, in my opinion. The base color plus the strip, if it has one, is what is going to help you track down specific wires and help you trouble shoot. There are lots of great wiring diagrams on the site and the web that tell you what everything means. Different year models sometimes use different color wires for the same application. Maybe if you post a pick of the connector in question you'll get more answers.

You probably knew all that, but just in case you didn't....

Sure. Here's a photo of what I need.
It appears I need the male version of this blue connector. I have the correct wiring. The 'notch' is on the edge of the connector whereas most Ford connectors seem to have it centered or off centered. This one is behind the driver's kick panel on the 86GT.
If anyone has one I can use, let me know.
Thanks.

Be warned that this is almost the blind leading the blind here!

Is the other end gone or in bad shape? You said you were going to need one soon.

Do any of these look like they would fit? I don't think the color really means much. If you cant find a replacement you could always get a new male and female connector and replace both connection points. I understand if you are trying to keep it all original and don't want to butcher it up, but if done right you and true mustang gods would be the only ones to know.

In the pic is that the one you need to replace for the trunk release or just a similar connector?

On my car, as best as I can remember, a connector that looks almost exactly like that except gray hooks up directly to the back of the hatch release button. I don't remember seeing a connector like that behind the drivers side kick panel. Mine is a 92.

Another option is to try to find one at a local mustang shop/salvage yard. I know of a couple of places down here in south Alabama that specialize in salvage mustang parts. I can hook you up with there contact information if you want it.

Thanks for the info. Good stuff. I'm trying to add the hatch release option so no damage to what's on the car. I need the connector and wire that would connect to the blue one in the photo. More good news: found just what I need and it will soon be on its way. I'll splice in the new old wire I have and the various connectors and that should do it.
