01 here, 57,000 miles roughly, not a single problem. Very reliable car, if taken care of properly. I mean what kind of car is reliable when someone beats the **** out it??? Look it over like everyone else said. I personally would change all of the fluids and filters- oil, fuel, plugs, tranny, coolant, etc. At least then you will know when to change them again, and you'll have the car running in tip top shape.
The 4.6 is very reliable and efficient, for a daily driver it will make a good car. Good luck.
01 GT vert here, with a 5-speed. My car just crossed 60K last week, and no issues with it. My car was well taken care of by the original owner, only driven on nice days, had every receipt for gas, oil change and maintenance, and only put 28K miles on it in 4 years. I've put just as many miles on it in 18 months(!!) cuz it's my daily driver. Depending on my lead foot, I'll get anywhere from 250-300 miles on a tank, with combined highway and city driving... mostly city.
One last thing, NEVER, under any circumstances, buy a car without having a mechanic look at it. "their" mechanic does'nt count, get it looked at. Not even just mustangs, but any car, it's lazy and ignorant and impacient not to have it checked out. Like compression test, oil leaks, checks for accidents, people will try to hide welds.
Sorry about such a long time to reply. Yes I'm sure they crushed it. My cousin's husband worked at the dealership that it was taken to be inspected. I don't think the issue was the torque box but rather the metal welds failing indicating metal fatigue. A couple mechanics even wanted to buy the car but they wouldn't even issue a salvage title. Awful suspicious that they would replace a car if it was a fixable problem. I think they were concerned about a metal issue and thus got rid of any evidence.
Yeah it's the welds that fail, wher the tourqe boxes are welded to the body.. very very easy fix and common, they probally bought you out of it as a customer satisfaction thing. Do you have the cars VIN number I am curious what they did with it. and if it was a tourqe box to body issue.
01 GT convertible here also and its great. It has been in a accident a few years ago and still drives great (all the body pannels had to be replace and some suspension). My car is well maintained with bolt-ons and a gear change to 3:73. The milage is under 40 thousand no problems here. I also agree to get a mechanic to look at it like was mentioned before. I might but it will have to wait until I get home. They didn't buy me out of it to satisfy me but because they didn't have a fix for it. That's what I was told. The dealership tech's didn't know how to fix it so some engineers from Dearborn came down looked at it and said junk it. The word I got was the metal was "bad" and that Ford knew about it, in fact knew what shipment it was and what cars were built with this "bad" metal. So they maybe could have fixed it but by doing so left theirselves open to more liability than just my car.
I find it hard to believe that if there was a fix for this that they would crush the car and give me a new one, the 02 I currently have. So I'm inclined to believe that there was more of an issue than what you describe and my guess it isn't on an official document.
