As the title says, I'm considering purchasing a 95 GT, 5 speed manual, 105k miles. What things should I check for when I look at it?

Are there any quirks of the 95 I should know about? Anything that I could expect to go wrong with it soon, etc.

I'm new to the 5.0 engine, I've had a 2.3 LX up to this point, so any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Check the balancer. Just check to see if there is a wobble at idle when running. When it's off just put your hand behind it and check to see if you can feel any rubber coming out of the back of it.

Check the all electrical devices, like power windows, driver seat, etc.

Just look over it good and you should be okay. I usually take about an hour just looking over the car before I buy it.

do what jake said + the usual things like check th color/smell of the oil, make sure all fluids have been kept up. the only problem ive had with my 95 in the 2 years ive had it is one bad balljoint and my alternator crapped out on me but that was mostly because of my stereo system at the time. you can also check the tires for even ware

Check for rust also. Rust will cost you extra on everything you do with the car. More labor, more broken parts, more broken sockets, just more everything.

see if it's still a virgin... engine bay, exhaust, color, everything... check little things like the oil filter, that will tell you if they care or not about it... (ie. FRAM = suckey cheap owners, K&N/Ford Performance filter = care and love car...) check the underneath extremely well, as well as having a guy behind it one the freeway to check the travel of the car, and most importantly, drive it like it's a muscle car... (ie, give it a really good work out on a test drive... floor it, shift fast, corner hard... it is a mustang after all...)

-soon down the road, new struts are a must, as well as the air filter, tires, u joints, tranny (possibly), and clutch...

-PM me if you want an even more detailed list...

Don't forget to run the A/C and the heat to make sure both operate properly at all the speeds without any noises. The A/C should be pretty cool.

See if the air silencer is still there. If so, the owner probably hasn't done anything major to the car in terms of modifications. By listening real well, you'll want to pay attention to the sounds from the engine at all rpm's to verify if it sounds good or if there are "extra" noises that seem out of place.

By all means, don't test drive with the radio on at all. A lot of sellers like to ride along for the test drive (which is ok), but many try to hide an assortment of noises by turning on the radio/CD. You didn't specify if the seller was a dealer or individual, just know that almost all dealers try to sell you on the stereo and other accessories in the car by diverting your attention to what you're really looking to buy....the car. Take control of the situation and get the audible/visual information you need during the whole process.

Sorry so long, but I cringe often at the frequent horror stories I hear of co-workers and friends buying cars without really paying attention to what they bought. In the end, they're not happy and blame the seller when they should blame themselves for not paying attention.

Good luck.

Thanks for all your help and sorry about the delay, my room got moved around and comp was down for a few days.

First of all, it is a car at a dealership, comes with a warranty (3 month/3k mile unlimited) and has extended warranty available (1-3 year). I saw the carfax report, clean title, 2 owners, both of which in my state, no accidents, looked good. My dad and I have both checked out the car, he verified that it was clean inside and out, as well as underneath the car. I went in the next day and had a look at it. The engine bay is, as far as I can tell, completely stock. Ford and factory stickers abound, it is remarkably clean, you honestly would think it just rolled off the line no more than 1000 miles ago. I forget the exact brand of oil filter, but it was white, so I'm going with either Motorcraft, K&N (which I think it was) or Cummings.

The test drive was fun, if not slightly on the side of making me nervous. For one, I hadn't driven stick in awhile, so I was praying I wouldn't stall ot (which I didn't until I parked it afterwards). Checked the AC, didn't leave in on the whole time, it was rather cold to begin with. Checked radio in the lot, then left it off for the remainder of the drive. Power seat works, as well as the cruise control. Smooth ride, quiet inside, and actually had power to it (The transition from a 2.3 auto to a 5.0 Manual is fun) something I'm not used to. At any rate, I didn't drive it very hard since I was still adapting to the manual, but I took it on the highway and had no trouble hitting 75, and then on the off ramp decided to open up some more. That didn't last too long because I hit 5 over the limit (55 from 35) within a second, so I was impressed. On a side note, maintaining 75 mph at ~1500 RPM was a decidely interesting experience.

As it stands, my dad is highly recommending that I buy the car, so the biggest thing now is insurance and other such details. Can anyone suggest anything else I check for?

Sounds like it is a virgin, which is had to find for sure. I'd say get it and start modding.

A couple other things to look for at that mileage is tranny syncro's ad clutch wear. I'm sure it's not the original clutch, so maybe try to find out when it was replaced. I'm assuming it went into each gear smoothly without any grinding correct?
