Convertible Conversion

Anyone every convert a hardtop (66) to a convertible?

More trouble than worth?

Cost?

Advice?

I've got all the pieces if your gonna try it.

However it looks like a bitch of a job. I was considering making a roadster out of one of my 65's but it would only have a bimini top that clipped on the windshield went over the rollbar and snapped to the rear deck with adjustable nylon straps. That wouldn't be too hard to do.

If you want to do it right then take HM's advice and find another project.

If you want to saw the roof off and drive around topless (and park in the garage when it MIGHT rain) I have seen it done. A friend of mine had a clapped out coupe, he put a 10-point rollcage into it and sawed the top off. It looked like hell but it worked :D

You will have to beef up the underside CONSIDERABLY, subframe connectors wont even come close to being enough. The cowl area is the biggest problem, convertibles had a different windsheild frame design that put a lot more stiffness into the platform. That is why the cage was necessary.
