i found a convertible in the junk yard recently and the top was in great condition. my top has gone to the dogs and i was wondering could i take the entire roof off the recked stang and put it directly on mine without any problem? i figure that it would be easier and cheaper than to buy a new vinyl top and pay someone to put it on. can it be done and is it simple?

i'm replacing my top this week.... i'll let you guys know how it goes. Going from a tan vinyl to a black cloth :nice: I'll make sure i take some before and after pictures.

I would definately just buy a new top and do the install yourself. You will have to take a lot apart anyway, so might as well be replacing it with something new. I did my top install in 8 hours.

ES Stangin says i would have to take alot of stuff apart, is this true? it would seem pretty easy to separate the existing top and replace it with a different top that's in excellent condition. what will be the difficult part to doing this? am i missing something about the top that i don't know about?

You will need to remove the rear seat backrest (2 bolts), the bottom seat cushion (held in by two clips at the front), the back quarter trim, door sill trim, etc. just to get access to the top. The top has many staples, two cables, the rear brackets that hold the top to the body.. blah blah blah. Its not as simple as my Jeep top which took undoing some velcro and a few torx bolts to take it off.

Read the instructions if you havent already as it explains what you will need to do.

What else do you want to know? Your best bet is to do a search.... i just made a post not too long ago about when I changed my top.

what i want to know is what i asked in the first part of the thread, which hasn't been answered. the only thing i'm getting is how to put a convertible top on your car by doing it yourself and blah blah blah. i'm looking for putting the whole roof on your car. a swap from one mustang convertible to another. has anyone ever done it and was it simple? is it more cost & time worthy to switch out the entire roof as compared to putting a new vinyl on? and one more thing , doing a search isn't as simple as you or anybody may think. i a veteran here, so i should know. one mention to a convertible may give you a hundred threads to search thru, and its nothing like person to person interaction.

Not many have done an entire top assembly swap. Its do-able, but if you are going to spend more than $100 on that assembly I wouldnt do it. A new top is only $160 and its NEW vs. a used one. If you are dead set on doing this then just buy the top assembly and make an attempt to figure it out.

ok caldwell, i guess if somebody puts that on my ass... i mean sig, i wouldn't complain.

chrismillion: there are a few problems I see wtih this installation. I would think that you should pull out the rear panels and see if you can see or get to the top assembly. After that you need to be able to detatch the cable that runs through the top, and that can be a bitch (you may be able to clip it and just add a little later or something). Next would be the rear of the top, this would be the hardest part, and is I believe one of the hardest parts in the top install. If you look at that manual, I would see if there is some easy way to remove the rear glass and connected materials, because I think if you have to do all that to get a USED top, it's not worth it.

if you need that guide or any more information, let me know.

my buddy did this on his 95 mustang, He took an entire top assembly from an 01 mustang. Well 7 months later I buy the car, during the time he never attempted to hook up the pump. Ok so I get to hooking up the pump and refill I get the top to work but it seems as the glass wont tuck in to continue folding all the way down. The top gets to the pot to where its pointing straight up and the glass is holding it from going down.. But to answer your question it was done, a top from an 01 to a 95 and this was the entire assembly .
