HELP-overheating/cooling fan won't come on w/o AC

My cooling fan will only come on with the A/C on. I've tested the (ECT) engine coolant temp sensor and it checked out fine. so my thought is that the CCRM is where the problem is? Does that sound right? Is there a way to verify that? I was going to hit up the local junk yard pick up a CCRM and replace the one I have, if that is indeed the problem. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I had a sim. problem and got a new ccrm (at 100$ too :notnice: ) it still didnt turn on. About a week or so later it would not start ended up being a bad block to chasis ground, replaced the wire and no problem yet. Might be a long shot but if you are getting bad ground all sorts of things can happen. That and its easy to check for if you have some 8g wire laying around with some time to check.

I dont know if you can have the ccrm tested out of the car, I went to a local ford dealer who said they could test mine they said it was bad and it did not fix the problem at all soo. You could always bite the bullet and take it somewere to have them check (if you trust them)

thanks a lot guys.
(Don 95Vert) so you really think there is a good chance it could still be the ECT? I tested it cold and at operating temp with an ohm meter and the resistance was right about where it should be. is the ECT a part that can partially malfunction? or is it something that goes out entirely?

Also, would it be a bad idea to put a ccrm from a junk yard in the car? since the ccrm controls several things besides the fan, i don't want to fry something else or make my problem worse. the one at the junk yard is $5, a new one is $140. but like blksn955.0 said, maybe i bite the bullet and take it to ford?? just would rather put the $$ somewhere else if i can fix it myself.
THANKS.

When mine was doing what your is, I swapped out tstats, waterpumps, added watter wetter and I bought a used CCRM from stangparts.com. None of that worked. Still overheated. Swapped in a $15 ECT sensor and the engine ran on the "O". The fan came on as designed.

Yeah, the only way I could get my fan to come on was to turn on the AC or defroster. Then the car would run better (cooler) but be much slower. It was lose/lose either way really. I say just replace the ECT. If it doesnt work, you are out $15. They maybe spend the $5 for the CCRM which I dont believe it is. I dont think they really go bad as often as people think. Usually when they go bad, they are up in flames....literally.

So would a bad ECT cuase any codes? I'm having the same exact problem but I'm not getting anything when I scan it. But the symptoms make sense: pinging, runs horribly when cold, no fan (only with A/C) and funky idle sometimes.

thanks so much.......

thanks for all the advice, especially jmuva44 & Don 95vert :hail2: . you guys are awesome, i replaced the ect $25(even though it tested out ok) and it totally fixed the fan problem. saved me $$ since i avoided taking it into ford. what a relief! thanks again.
