Ok here is some info about my car first. 1964.5 mustang 289 auto. problems are that car is putting water in catch can at high rpms and engine has a miss on one side and idle around 1200 rpm car has a 180 degree t-stat and will get up to around 205. has 16 lb. cap. could i have blown a head gasket? i just put engine back together for restoration and have around 120 miles. i had the heads redone. has new waterpump, t.stat, radiator, all hoses. engine does not overheat put on manual gauge to check temp. does not put water in oil. could head be cracked? engine is bored .040. if drive around 65-70 car stays around 195 degrees. the guy that works for me says he thinks that the head is cracked and letting compression into the cooling system because there is so much pressure on the hoses. thanks in advance. i know i just jumped around on things but typed as i was thinking

What kind of fan do you have? Do you have a shroud as well? How many rows is the radiator? If the engine is mild and has a new cooling sysyem with a decent tune, it shouldn't get past even 190 on a 180 thermostat. Mine is moderately built and only gets hot on long uphill grades in 100+ weather.

A way to know if a headgasket is blown or a head is cracked is to let the engine warm up with the radiator cap off. if there are lots of tiny bubbles, then there's a good change air is getting in from the combustion chamber. Some parts stores also sell little pH-style test strips that detect combustion byproducts in the coolant...which should never be there.

fan is the six blade that came with my a/c system (classic auto air system). radiator is a three row.only thing not stock is mild cam, carb, intake, shorty headers, roller rockers.no shroud.does have some bubbles so i guess i'll pull heads and check would this also cause the miss on the pass. side has all new plugs, wire, cap, rotor and pertronix inightior thing to replace point but just brought hei dis. for it

Well not having a shroud woudl be an issue at idle or low speed. I would go to harbor freight and get the blow head gasket towl. Its some thigie that connects to radiator instead of cap. Let your car run at it will tell you. Looking for bubbles gives you an idea. You could also do a compresson check on all cylinders and note the differences. too much means head, rings, valve, or gasket.
