Cooling Problem

i have an 86 which runs great can drive for hours but after running it, especially on the highway, it heats up at traffic lights and in slow traffic. My question is, can I stick an electric fan in as an auxiliary or will it interfere with my stock fan? I'm looking at a flex a lite trim line. Just curious if anyone has done this. Thank you
 
It is usually one or the other; electric or belt driven. If it's only occurring at low speed and stops then your fan clutch likely needs to be replaced.

It would be difficult to move more air than the stock fan with an electric one. Not impossible, but difficult. The OEM fan moves quite a bit of air. I still have mine in my 86 and when I start the car (you may recall the same thing) it moves everything loose, out from under the engine bay. :nice:

So replace your fan-clutch and you'll probably be good. Let us know how it goes.

Ok thank you! Just been a pain having to stress about it thought electric would fix it but the clutch is only a hundred bucks I'll do that for sure

I did forget to mention I have mods such as an f 303 cam, cai, x pipe, roller rockers, some other odd ends. Now I have read that once you start adding little things here and there that eventually the stock fan struggles to keep up. Which is why I was looking into more of an auxiliary electric fan that I can turn on as needed. Now I will replace the fan clutch first, but have you heard of an auxiliary type of electric fan in case that doesn't fix the issue?

Nope, have not heard of that. You generally go all electric or not electric. If the stock fan is working properly and your radiator is in good shape, you will probably be squared away. If you decide to get into a power adder a larger radiator is often required.

It couldn't hurt. Consider this though... New radiator generally means, hoses, gaskets, maybe water pump (miles/condition dependent), and it's usually not a bad idea to change the heater core to aluminum when swapping the radiator, t-stat.... It can snowball quickly.


If you are hell bent on electric fans then a radiator and heater core would be on my list. You'd at least not be spending the same money twice or....


Drain and flush the cooling system and make sure your fan clutch is in perfect working order then plan out your cooling system to handle current and future mods (least down-time).
