im having troubles keeping the stang cool while sitting still. i have a 180 t-stat and i just put in a new water pump. i also flushed the radiator but the temp. gets higher while sitting.

suggestions?

You might consider doing what I just did and order an aluminum rad. I just ordered my from street or track because they give you a bracket that moves the radiator in more so you can get a bigger electric fan but the wait is about 5 weeks. If you don't plan on useing a electric fan you can just order one from summit.

i run a flex fan attached to the engine, as well as a 12 inch electric fan in front of the radiator as well. i know the flex fan isnt the best at doin its job but it shouldnt make a 35+ degree difference

for what it's worth .... I too was experiencing over-heating at stops on a fairly stock 289, Holley 4 bbl, 4-spd .... have 180 deg t-stat .... flushed the entire system .... for better or worse, I replaced the rad with a new 3 core Modine (from CJ Pony) *and* added a matching shroud .... I reused the original stock 4-blade fan too (yes, this may seem odd, but that's what it had when I bought it 1970, and *NO* shroud) .... got a new belt and tensioned it properly .... using pre-mixed permanent 50-50 coolant (contains demineralized water) .... new hoses all around while the system was apart .... old water pump still in service .... also added a new overflow tank (stainless steel unit from National Parts Depot - this tank looks really good mounted on driver's side of rad to front cowling) .... the new rad also has a wider core (1 1/2" on both sides) than the "original" rad .... still fit the mounting holes perfectly .... all of this has corrected my over-heating problems ..... the shroud really helps the fan pull air through the rad instead of sucking air in from the sides .... also, for proper cooling, heed the 50-50 mixture ratio of the coolant .... too much either way will cause poor performance of the coolant -- i.e., won't cool adequately .... Ford Muscle did a couple of articles, one on new rad (3 core) and another on electric fan from an early Taurus 3.6L .... I acknowledge an electric fan has advantages, so that mod will come when I get to doing some serious engine overhauling and an upgraded alternator (3G+) .... hope this helps ....

hahahah oh my robert....if i have to read another thread of you on cooling :-P.....get rid of the flex fan and use a big block rigid 6 blade fan....i run everything you do, except with 2 differences....i dont have a fan shroud, and i use a big block 6 blade rigid fan and driving it in texas heat and humidity i never saw over 185

i dont have a fan shroud either. someone replaced my radiator with one not meant for the car. the had to cut into the battery tray to allow for more room.

so a 6 bladed fan? what if i got one and had it say powder coated or chromed?

Has it allways run hot?
Are you sure your air/fuel mixture is adjusted correctly?

Stock pulleys? or aftermarket?

have you replace your radiator cap letely?
A bad cap will not let the system build pressure=cooling system wont work well.

I would also get rid of the pusher fan, and get a good electric fan (puller)

if thats out of the question , a standard fan AND a shroud.

or did you change or adjust something recently.

After your thermostat opened , did you top off your water/coolant. Any air trapped in your cooling system will create problems.

i have a 180 stat (my temp gauge must be 5 degrees off cause it says 175 when it opens)

i dont have a shroud either. i havent changed anything in a long while. im gonna go to my used stang parts guy and see if he has a big metal blade i guess. try it out for abuot a week. if it works it will stay on. if not its goin back

if it runs cool while driving it is most likley an air flow problem over the radiator. I know a fan shroud makes a big difference especially in 65-66s. I just upgraded and built a 5.0 and added AC so I am looking around for the perfect cooling solution for here in socal with my combo.

My old combo was a flex, fan 3 core stock radiator, and an electric pusher for the 91 freeway parking lot. On 100 plus days it rarely went over 210. I think the hotest it got was 215. When I installed the cheezzy Ford shroud the average temp dropped 10 degrees. from about 205 to 190.
