cost comparison and benefits of auto to manual tranny conversion

My stang is about to go into the shop for some major work (basically restoration). As i am not a purist, i am definately looking into the possibility of switching from my trusty and reliable C4 over to a more fun and exciting manual (4 or 5 speed). the C4 needs a rebuild, and would recieve a new stall converter and shift kit if that's what i opt for. My other option is a new or used manual transmission. I would most definately prefer a 5-speed, due to the wonderful overdrive gear for highway use. It won't be a daily driver but a sunny Sunday cruise on the open road would be nice. Here is my real question:
Comparing the cost of the C4 rebuild and extra beefy parts vs. a new or used 5 speed, which is more economically efficient? I have read about the issues with driveline angle in T-5's and Tremec TKO's so i don't even know if there's a 5-speed that will fit without modifications. Take into account, of course, that i'll need the clutch pedal and all that jazz as well. Thanks in advance for the replies.

I was considering doing the same thing to my 67 and found a t5 out of a turbo coupe 4 cyl version for 250. I found out you can use them but be prepaired for a rebuild if your v8 runs strong. you have to use a probe v6 pilot bushing. I know a guy that has done this and his car runs fine he says the 4 cyl trannies are abused a lot less than a used v8 trannie. makes since but I have been told if you have the money go with rebuilt or new v8. also the 4 cyl have a 4.0 first gear so if you have anything more than 308's your first will be likegrannie gear. I have 380's. You have to buy or make x member, cable conversion or all the orginal zbar and clutch bars and a block for a t5 bellhousing. the correct flywheel 28 or 50 oz depending on your engine, and have your direline shortened as well as clutch and brake pedal. for the 250 tranny and i have a 50 oz flywheel I was going to get machined to a 28 oz it was goingto run me about a thousand bucks. a cable clutch setup can be fabbed up easily at home. Total cost was about $30 for the cable and I'll say $2 for a scrap of 3/8" angle iron. I had my flywheel rebalanced for $35, driveshaft shortened for $50, bought a crossmember from Mustangs Unlimited(about $75 maybe, I forget). I used the late model bellhousing, clutch, pressure plate, etc. A T5 swap is one of those things you can spend anywhere from $400 to $2500 depending on your approach. There are lots of different configurations.
 
Find a donor late model stang and pull the tranny and everything that goes with it. If you have the "whole" car, you would still need to buy the pedal assembly, clutch cable, cross member and tranny mount because these don't interchange. You'll have to shorten the driveshaft as well. I've found these parts new for around $450 total, not counting the tranny. I've seen used fox body trannies for $400-$600 but others on this site might know where to find them cheaper. If you can only find the tranny by itself without the donor car wrapped around it, mustangs plus has a complete conversion kit for $650 that will give you everything you need for the swap. The driveline is no issue.

Not sure what an AOD with shift kit cost, but why would you want to drive a automatic when you can have a 5 speed!!! Bring on the highway!
 
Did the conversion on the 67 from c4 to T5 and it was a GREAT upgrade.

There are different paths to choose when chosing the tranny, and clutch cable/hydraulic kit. What kind of headers do you have and what kind of HP are you running?

Tri-Y's, and it'll have ~340hp in a couple weeks when it's outta the shop
 
i took a look on ebay and noticed that most of the used T-5's from foxbody mustangs are going for ~$300. I'd probably have to rebuild it, so that's another couple hundred. add the various parts i'll need for the conversion and it doesn't seem like it'd be too much more than rebuilding the C4 w/ a new torque converter and shift kit.
if i'm wrong, then i'm wrong. but i think i'm pretty much set on converting to a T-5
 
If you are going to go with a T5 it would be better to get one originally built for a V8. The 4/6 cylinder T5s will not hold up for long behind your engine and will require modification before you can install them. There is a large amount of information on the web on the T5 swap into the 65-68 mustangs, of course you probably know that already. I like the hydraulic clutch setup by the way.

I figure I should throw in my $.02

First off before considering swapping to a 5spd, I would try and find a set of pedals. You can use teh automatic pedal setup bracket, but its easier to just buy the whole setup from a used car. These things are HARD to come by and expensive when you do find them. It took me about a year to find an pedal setup for my 69 stang and it cost me just about $200. IF you can find the pedal setup then consider the swap. Worse comes to worse you can sell the pedal setup later.

Costs:
Automatic tranny rebuild with new converter: $900
Shift Kit: $100

T5 (fresh): $500
Pedal setup: $150
Cable clutch setup: $200
Clutch: $150
Flywheel: $50
Crossmember: $100
Shifter: $100
Bell Housing: $50

Well, thats pretty basic. You can get the T5 stuff cheaper if you buy it used. The T5 is supposed to hold up to right around 350hp and 350ft/lbs of torque but its going to depend on how you drive. If you granny it, it will last. Race it left and right you will be replacing it really soon. 2nd and 3rd gear suck in t5's and go out easily. If you plan on racing, get higher quality parts when you go to the t5.. Get a scattershield, nice shifter, clutch... You are better off spending a little more now than replacing the stuff over and over.


I dont like buying used t5's cause you never know what kind of junk you may end up with. You might end up with a nice t5 that was never raced but you might get a tranny that has 2nd gone and third is going too... You can get a used flywheel and bell housing and not have to worry. Dont get a 4cyl t5 either. If you have to get it rebuilt, why bother get a 4cyl one.
 
I'm in the later stages of my C4 to T5 swap in my '68 myself. I'd recommend trying to get a '90 or later T5 as they have the higher torque rating.

I believe you can use '94 and later T5's that are in the V6 Mustangs too, although the input shaft is too long. I believe they are rated at 265 ft/lbs like the '85-'89 V8 T5s. I don't think it would be too difficult to swap out the input shaft either(regardless of what the Ford Muscle website says). You would have to get another bellhousing if you used later V6 T5 though.

I bought a wore out T5 from an '86 GT that I rebuilt, and I thought that installing and shimming the input shaft was fairly simple compared to some of the other stuff!

I spent as much rebuilding it myself(maybe more) than I would have if I had someone else do it though. You'll need access to a press if you decide to rebuild it yourself, and I'd recommend the rebuild video from Bob Hanlon too.

I went with a Lakewood T5 bellhousing(so that I could use a cable clutch although a factory T5 bellhousing will of course work here too) and I had to grind off I'd say about a 1/4" off the mounting flange of the bellhousing on the driver's side so that the bellhousing would clear my hedman headers. The T5 bellhousing also pinches the air conditioner drain hose in the transmission tunnel too.

The lakewood toploader bellhousing is shorter, so it probably wouldn't hit the A/C drain hose(if you have air conditioning); but you'd have to modify the bellhousing to use a cable clutch, and probably grind the flange somewhere as well.

The Lakewood to engine block bolts are 7/16-14 coarse thread, and 1 1/4" long in case you do choose to get a Lakewood from ebay or something like that and someone has lost/kept the bolts. They also have 7/16" small outside diameter washers on the bolts about the same size as lock washers would be.

I also used those same bolts and washers to bolt the T5 up to the bellhousing.

I'd recommend getting an aftermarket 28 oz. flywheel drilled for the late model 10 1/2" clutch. I'm using a early flywheel, and the 10 1/2" clutch will not fit unless I had it redrilled which I don't want to chance. I did try a late model 351 flywheel and while it is still 28 oz., it wasn't drilled for the 10 1/2" clutch either! It also weighed 30 lbs where the early flywheel only weighed 20 lbs so I decided to stick with the early flywheel that I already had.

I bought a 10" diaphragm clutch set for an '85 GT as I knew this would have a roller pilot bearing, and the proper throw out bearing for my T5 clutch fork. The only problem is that this pressure plate will not allow me to use the original flywheels dowel pins that I bought! I'm tired of going back to the parts store so I'm gonna use this clutch kit anyway!

Oh, I didn't have to trim my shifter opening for the T5 shifter either. I barely have enough room. I did have to lower the transmission to install the shifter though. I also don't think that I'll have to shorten the driveshaft.

There appears to be about an inch between the base of the slip yoke and the tailshaft housing. Also, I did not notice any binding when I lowered the rear of the transmission to install the shifter. YMMV

I've started hooking up the clutch cable kit, and I'm hoping that the headers aren't going to be too difficult. I can already see that a header tube is in the way, but hopefully I'll be able to work around it. We shall see.
