I bought a 2002 motor for the price of a head swap kinda. I was looking and for a full head swap kit that included new covers, plugs, wires, oil, gaskets exc... it was 1500 not including shipping. You could do a head swap in your driveway and with advance auto allowing you to loan out tools you would need for free -minus the refundable deposit- ... If I were you I would just look for a whole motor first. I guess I got a little lucky but you should be able to find a 99+ motor and then have a shop swap it in for realtively cheap...

I was quoted $1500 and they said it would take about 3 days.

I've seen anywhere from 1200 to 2000 for a head swap plus a tune. It's not cheap, especially because the easiest way to do it is to remove the motor.

if you have the tools it can be done in your driveway. Hell even if you don't they will cost less than 1200.
