Could to Low temp thermostat hurt me?

I have a hypertech 160* T-Stat and i put it in when i did my PI intake swap after my stock NPI intake craked. The reason i ask is my car just dont feel like it has any power at all anywhere and i cant figure it out, it is driving me insane. Every now and then it will run fine but most of the time it is not. What do you guys think it is?? I have replaced Plugs, Wires, Fuel Filter, Tranny Filter and Fluid, Cleaned K&N. It still dont run right. It does not surge, jerk, or anything like that. I need help!!!!!

You'll most likely run rich and poorly.

In the old days, where relatively high compression and carburetion were king, lower temps were more preferable. Fuel Injection, the PCM's settings, and these modular motors need some heat in order to perform at their peak.

get a 180* thermo

160 is not recommended on a N/A car. the engine will go into closed loop mode actually reduing power in the car. this is one case wher colder is not better.

I think you mean open loop.

Ummmmmm......wouldn't changing to a PI intake without changing the heads cause some issues too?????

Hey red2000gt 12.28@96.70? how does that work lol?

Supposedly before 180*s the car is in open loop (like said) and what this does is it pulls timing...thats why power is dropped. Although my car seems to run better cold .

nope, its an easy swap using PI gaskets and alittle RTV at the corners...

Those 8.10 gears he installed give a good kick off the line, but at 96mph he runs out of top speed in 5th.

The transition from cold start open loop to closed loop is controlled by time - the time is modified by temperature, but it will never fail to go into CL because of a lower temp stat.

This is correct. You basically have three conditions the eec sees for startup. Cold, warm, and hot. Each of which will change the delay for going into closed loop. Now the 180 degree mark IS however, the transition mark for the eec to switch from the startup fuel table to the base fuel table. The startup fuel table is richer in most cells.

the 160 will cause the car to stay in warm up mode and will result in poor performance. stay with the 180

I believe it will increase engine wear. The stock thermo (195) is best for reliability. A 180 is the best mix of performance an relibility, 160 you will get more engine wear and almost no performance gains. I would stay stock or go 180 but only if you need it. Say for preventing pining with advanced timing.
