couple of engine questions

I just recently put a new motor in my 84 svo 1c, everything went smooth and real quick. Now the only problems im have is i have a ford motorcraft timing sprocket on it, now i set at 0 degrees and line all the timing marks and then start the car and it will run but when you step on the gas it doesnt want to go anywhere and then when you step on to far it backfires, now as far as that cam sprocket i want to put at 6+ but i dont know how to adjust this kind of sprocket i know you just put the cam at tdc and do you just pull the bolt off the sprocket take it off and turn it to 6+ or were ever you want it. Cause if thats the right way i did that, and it still does that same problem.

Now i replaced the spark plugs
tfi coil
tfi module
aic
tps
spark plug wires
cap and rotor

And it does run real rich to, but i know i got the initial timing perfect as far as the distributer and the motor at tdc, i just dont know how to work that cam sprocket.

any help would be great.

You want to set the cam to about, -4 degrees, it will make your powerband longer. You want your timing marks on the cam cover to be in the 10-15 degrees advanced. If you have no throttle response and backfires, you probably have the dist off a couple of degrees. And you will probably regret putting the cam at +6 degrees, it will put the top power and tourque at about 4k. How you move it is this simple, loosen the bolt to the cam and then turn the sprocket to where you want it.

Actually, by 6+ I assume you mean 6 degrees advanced? If you advanced the cam that far, all your power would be down low and the engine would probably have very little even at 3000 rpm.

Is the motorsport sprocket one of the "quick adjust" sprockets, or is it that "multi-index" one that you have to take off to adjust? If you have the multi index one, you have to find the keyway for your setting (which you should try 4 deg. retarded for now), then find the timing mark for that setting...put that keyway onto the cam, then line up the corresponding mark to the timing pointer.

I'm not sure about the throttle response and backfiring, could it be that your cam is off just enough that it's causing it? I'm not really sure.
