Cowl area rust + POR-15 = Win!

Has anyone dealt with rust in the cowl area? My 1988 has just over 18,000 miles and is in great shape or so I thought until the other day a spot of orange under the cowl grill caught my eye. A closer look and I saw rust, lots of rust. After I pulled everything apart I found that it was only surface rust but I wanted to get a handle on it. I have prior experience with Por-15 and have used it to seal the tanks on my Ducatis and it was my first choice to fix this issue. As of right now I have the paint stripped, cleaned and prepped and am waiting for a dry day to get to the actual Por-15 application.

What is everyone else doing about this type of thing?

I did that to Hack Job. I just tipped the can and let it run in there and I spread it with a brush. My cowl was solid, but I saw just a little surface rust in there. POR15 actaully sticks better to the rusty surfaces than bare metal, but it will still work good. I even sprayed it underneath Hack Job. It looks great and as a high gloss.

so will the por-15 actually stop surface rust if you spread it on top?

I guess it depends on prep. I have used the fuel tank kit to repair Ducati gas tanks with rust scale at the weld seam. The fuel tank kit has a rust dissolver, then a follow up etch, then the actual por-15 coating.

If you go to the por-15 website there is a good write-up on how to apply and how it works. Good stuff!

Yesterday I received an email from por-15 thanking me for my purchase and offering a 10% discount until the end of May with promo code: PCAA508. Their stuff is good but good also equals expensive so any discount helps.

It stop rust in it's tracks. That stuff is hard as a rock, and it's non-pourus, so it doesn't breathe. Moisture will not get under it. I pounded a peice of my floor pan in with a BFH so the fuel lines wouldn't rub, and it didn't even chip or peel.:nice:

I like the stuff that Eastwood sell a little better, it also comes in colors other than Black.

Por-15 comes in colors besides black - clear and silver. Per the Por-15 site, they only make the 3 colors because other colors require porous pigments, where black and silver do not. Porous pigments mean the paint won't completely repel water, negating the rust protection.

Black, Silver, and Clear for the Eastwood Stuff too, but I also think they might have one that looks like Red Oxide too. Since my Car is Silver I used obviously used the Silver, stuff works awesome.
