crackling noise from engine

everytime i hit high rpms when racing or just driving fast i hear this crackling noise from my engine, does anyone know what this could be? its not to loud but it doesnt sound good. thanks

What is your timing set at and are you using premium fuel? If it sounds like marbels rolling around in a can, then it's detonation - and detonation = bad news. Detonation - http://www.misterfixit.com/deton.htm

Try backing off timing 1* and make sure you use premium fuel

my timing is set at whatever is it set at stock, it doesnt sound like marbles rolling it sounds like crackling, like how a fire will crackle almost but just really fast. also my car is stock so i always used 87 octane because thats what it says to use but i just started using 89 the other day and it still did it.

94/95 GT's are well known for pinging (aka detonation), even with stock timing. Run the tank nearly empty and fill it with premium. If it goes away, then it's definitely pinging.

Sounds like detonation to me. My stang did that, previous owner advanced the timing, and I wasnt informed. Filled her up the next time to the gas station with premium and it was fine.

its hard to diagnose sounds online but im gonna have to agree its pinging/predetinating. which even on stock motors is quite commen as they get older. carbon tends to build up on the heads and the carbon glows making the engine diesel.

premium is gonna be your ticket.

once it hits 150k miles that engine is history an im buyin the 5.0 gt40 crate motor, im on 79k miles right now so i have a little ways to go, thanks for the help guys, ill let you know if the premium gas works, also, in ct there is premium and super gas, (91 and 93) they are both the same price, should i just use the better one out of those two?

I just figured this out on my fox, been battling it for 2.5 years now... Its the AC system. Not sure if it was because my compressor was low on oil... but I recharged/oiled my AC and that eliminated the problem entirely.

My engine would crackle past 3k rpm under load, but never free-revving and it seemed to get worse the faster I went (sounds like something on the pulley drive system). This topic hasn't been posted in for some time but I figured I would pass down the advice I wish someone would've given me.

I agree 100% with detonation. I JUST fixed this with the distributor replacement. Might be a bad PIP too. That's what cured my stang for good.

Does no-one pull codes anymore? I just can't imagine trying to diagnose a problem without first checking to see what the PCM senses and logs. Maybe I'm just old-new school. Increasing the octane is not a fix. At best it's a temporary band-aid. The absence of a CEL means nothing and should not be the criteria upon which one decides to pull codes.
