I am looking to get a new torque convertor for my 1969 Mach 1. I have a C6 and am looking at an aftermarket converter. The place I am discussing a possible purchase says, "yeah, yeah, yeah, no problem" but I have my doubts. First, I note that neither B&M Racing nor TCI makes a TC for a 1969 C6 for a 351W. If you ask them, they will tell you that their TCs for C6s other than 1969 will not fit my particular application. Something about the dimensions of the crank pilot. Does anyone know the dimensions of the crank pilot on a 1969 351W mated to a C6 from the same year?

It’s my understanding there are two Crank Pilot Diameter, 1.375 and 1.850. I know the 1.850 is for the big blocks because I bought one last year. My guess is the 1.375 is for all other Ford applications.

Summit sells TCI’s in both sizes. Here is the link.

here is the problem. click either the street figther/super street fighter or the Break Away from your link then click "check to make sure this part fits your application." You get this.

Make FORD
Transmission Type C-6
Torque Converter Usage Street/Strip
Beginning Year 1971
Ending Year 1991

Drivetrain RWD
Bellhousing Bolt Pattern Ford

You will notice that 1969 is NOT inside the date range. If you go to the TCI web site (BM racing too), you don't see 1969 351W TCs being offered. BTW, there are also 1.25" crank pilots. I just dunno

ford never put the c6 behind a smallblock in 69. the only automatic available for the 69 351W was the FMX. are you quite sure you don't have an FMX instead? it is a pretty damn stout trans but not a lot of available aftermarket support. TCI and Art Carr both make convertors for the FMX but you may have to call and ask them specifically instead of looking in the catalog as i'm pretty sure they aren't listed in the book anymore. i'll check TCI's site and see if i can come up with a part number for you.

the part numbers for the FMX convertors from tci are

11" breakaway 482200
10" streetfighter 482000

both of these convertors use the 1.375 crank pilot which is standard SBF ford size. so if you really do have a c6 in your car and not an FMX you would need the convertor with the 1.375 crank pilot. the small block c6 has a one piece case/bellhousing whereas the FMX has cast iron main case with a seperate aluminum bellhousing and tailhousing. also the FMX has a basically square oil pan and the c6 has a wierd kick off on the back that is pretty good sized.

hope this info is helpful to you.

Thanks Brian. There is no data plate on my car so I don't know what it originally came with. The reason I think I have a C6 is two fold. First, the seller's ad specified that the car had a C6. Second, when my car was up on the lift, I glanced at the transmission oil pan and noticed "C6" on the pan, leading me to conclude that I have a C6. Maybe one of the POs swapped out whatever was in there for the C6. Or maybe my car originally came with a BB and one of the POs swapped out the engine for a 351W SB.

yeah, there are a lot of scenarios of what could have happened, but i can tell you that the c6 was swapped in from a later model small block c6 eguipped vehicle due to the convertor snout, the big block snout won't the small blocks and neither will the bellhousing, different bolt pattern.

I can see the number "70" on the top of the tranny housing from the engine bay, just behind and below the intake. Does that number have any significance?

The VIN in the windsheld should give you your engine code. 5th digit should be H for 351-2v or M for 351-4v. You can get all the info on your car at Marti Auto Works. They also make new door tags. Anways, just snap a picture of your transmission oil pan, post it, and it will be idetified.

Hi Frode. Merry Christmas.

My VIN tells me I had a 4V. As for the the data tag, one of the POs had painted over it. I had to look 3 times before I could make it out. I determined the very last digit was an "X", which means that the car came with an FMX tranny. Along the line, somebody swapped it out for a C6. I know because when the car was up on the lift, I saw "C6" stamped on the tranny oil pan and it has that texax pan handle corner. Until BNickel set me straight on the fact that the C6s never went behind small blocks in 1969, I was going crazy. Now that I am better informed, I am ok. It is a lot easier to get aftermarket parts for the C6 than for the FMX so I consider myself better off in the long run. Now I can get that new wide ratio 6 pinion planetary and the new custom torque converter, neither of which I could do if I had the original FMX.
