crank pulley went south

a few days ago i turned on my a/c while in traffic and it started to squeek really bad. when i got home i checked the belt, and it was fine. i looked at the crank pulley and the rubber ring that goes around it was amlost completly gone, there was maybe an inch of rubber left on it. has this every happened to anyone? seems kinda odd that it would just fall off or what not.

needless to say i went to powered by ford and bought some underdrive pullies. hopefully everything will go smooth with the install. any tips before i start?

by the way, its an automatic 98 turd.

Keys points...

The crank bolt with be huge PITA to break loose. Use something for leverage...it's good to have two people for this...one to hold the crankshaft (I jammed a large screwdriver behind the pulley and braced against the block) and the other to break the crank bolt. Good to spray some PBblaster or similar and soak it down.

Pulley puller...I bought a Craftsman for $25..ruined it and got another free. Just make sure you use the wide piece on the end so the spindle doesn't just slide into the center of the crankshaft.

Heat the new crank pulley in boiling water so it slides onto the crankshaft easier.

Don't forget to put RTV in the keyway of the crankshaft before you slide the crank key in. If not you will develop an oil leak.

That's all I can think of...anyone else pie in if you have more.
