I am trying to get to my timing chain to replace it with a new one but i can't seem to get the crankshaft damper to come off. Whenever i try to break it loose the pully and damper just spin. How do I get it off. Please help.

To get the bolt loose, which sounds like the problem you are having, you need to stop the engine from turning while cranking on it. With an engine in the car, I do this by pulling a spark plug and sticking the end of a rope or cut fan belt in there. When the piston comes up against the rope, the engine will stop turning.

Even easier is to remove the flywheel/flexplate inspection cover from the bellhousing and jam a screw driver into one of the holes in the flywheel/flexplate, then turn the crank till it's jambed against the bellhousing.

That also sounds better from the standpoint of introducing dirt, rope, and/or fan belt particles into the cylinder. I know it would be above the rings, but it still sounds like the better of the two options. :)

Agreed!

You should try to keep even dust out of the inside of your motor if possible.

That's a new one... please use the alternative method of removing the bell cover and lock the flexplate. With this method, you will probably f**k up your valvetrain since the rope/fan-belt is getting pinched between the valve and the piston!

Then there's the one where you put a socket and breaker bar on the bolt and jam the bar onto to something in the engine compartment and then turn the engine over with the ignition switch (coil wire is off the distributor, of course). I read that on this board onnce - never tried it.

Once I rented an impact gun it came off in about five seconds. In fact, it came off so fast it the impact ran into the radiator as the bolt unscrewed. Luckily there was no major damage. Anyways, while you are renting that, rent a balancer puller too. there is no good way to pull the balancer without it, and it only costs something like ten or fifteen buck. Thirty bucks and ten minutes with both tools rented.
