Well, i figured i'd post this because a lot of belt length questions get posted and since pretty much everyone uses them, it's worth looking into.

Last autumn, i swapped on my Windsor heads and X cam. When the swap was done, my belt was WAY too long. At the time i blamed this on the possibility that the holes in those 40 year old heads were drilled in a slightly different location than the '85 heads that i had been using. No big deal, bought a shorter belt.

Now, i just finished my 347 and got it all together....with the SAME heads. I go to put the same belt on that came off (the one i had just bought) and now it's TOO LONG. Ok, are my heads shrinking or what? This time around, i figured that since i had bought a new water pump that maybe the location of the pulley was slightly different and just enough to change the belt path. So, off to buy another belt i go....i get one that's only a half inch shorter because the belt will go on but it rubs at the tensioner/water pump.

So i come home with the shorter belt, go to put it on and i'm shocked because this one is way way way too short. Ok...so lets try the one that was just 1/2 inch too long...nope...too short. Ok...wtf? So we dig out the collection of belts laying around the garage and find one that fits...and it's the one that was originally on my car before i did the Windsor head swap to begin with....i was back at the beginning.

Now...why did this happen? Well, turns out that there's enough slop in the FRPP A/C delete kit's bolt holes that if you loosen the brackets or take it off and put it back on in a slightly different position, it throws off your belt length and could be as much as 2 inches total! So...just something to think about the next time you're playing with your belts. If you find that you're inbetween belt lengths or that your tensioner is "bottoming out", you may wanna loosen your PS bracket and pry it over to the driver's side and tighten it back down and that'll take up a huge amount of slack in your belt. I would suspect that the alt. bracket is the same way.

Hmmmm that is good info. I just instaled my Ford Racing A/C delete kit tuesday. Luckily we still have one mom and pop parts store here and I know the guys pretty well. He just gave me a whole pile of belts that I thought might be close and told me to bring them back later and pay for the one that fit.

If I had seen your thread before then I would have tried moving the bracket around on a few of the close ones now I know for next time. Good info and good post thanks.:nice:

I have experienced this same issue. Thanks for sharing.

Belt length changes depending what way you route the belt around the Crank and Water pump pulley....the difference is about 2"

I use standard 5.0 Bracketry on my 351....95" belt one way 97" belt the other way. It was the same way when building mt 302 cept for a shorter belt. Still a 2" difference.

Forget the pics i want to hear it:nice:

Funniest thing is, it looks exactly how it did before only cleaner and with blue paint. Works great for keeping it low key (until you start it..lol).

1/2" is a huge difference. Take a belt and put it in front of you stretched out. Then, just move one side of the belt in one inch towards the center and look how much the belt sags.

Very Nice:nice: How's it feel compared to before the swap?

It's ridiculous...even considering my car was an easy 12.50 car with the stock short block. At the moment it's a real butt pucker ride because i don't have a rev limitor hooked up...and the first time i laid into it hard, as soon as the tires broke loose it shot straight to 7500RPM (here's an "i told you so" to whoever that was that said it wouldn't rev that high with hydrolic lifters..lol). It shocked me so bad that i missed 2nd gear and just coasted down the road all white knuckled. I really can't believe how strong it pulls with the heads i'm using...they must be ported better than i thought. If i ever have them off again i wanna have them flow benched. Drivability is also pretty tame for the size cam i'm using (.576/.576 lift, 240/248 duration @ .050, 110lsa). I'm gonna TRY to get it dynoed either Monday or Tuesday if i can get in but i think it's a bit late to get scheduled.

Just wanted to post up a THANK YOU! I have been having issues with my belt and went to see if I could find a different size because the 685 was to small and the 690 started rubbing after a few days of it being on the car. I just read your post and adjusted the power steering/AC delete and was able to adjust it out about 1/4". That minute adjustment sealed the deal on the belt.

Thanks!
