Before I get too involved in making this work, I was hoping to get some confirmation that it is a decent fan. I can't seem to find any info on it...

I found an e- fan in a Crown Vic this weekend ($15). It seems to be from a 95-97 Vic.

Here is a pic,

This fan is much larger than the Taurus fan, and looks like it will be much easier to mount in the stock 5.0 shroud.

I hope to order a DCC for the fan and e- wp in the next week or so.

Is this fan worth the effort of installation?

Thanks,
jason

Well, a Crown Victoria's a bigger, heavier car that will surely see more load to the engine and put more stress (heat) on the transmission than a lighter car like a Mustang. Cabbies and police officers let their cars idle for sometimes hours at a time, with the AC at full blast and don't fry their engines. If you've determined it'll fit a Mustang, I'd say go for it. Maybe you'll start a new trend:p .

i found a thunderbird fan and had to make it fit, so i did..i ended up cutting some plastic off it around the bottom areas so it sits flush, and the fan motor was taller so it baically sits 1/4" away from the water pump pulley...if the motor sat in the center of the crank pulley it sat too low, the top of the fan is about 3" down from the top of the radiator

Thanks guys,
The Vic fan motor looks to be very similar to the fan motor on the Taurus fan, if not exactly the same.
But the blade diameter is much larger...

I'll post a pic of how I get it mounted...

Hey Jason,

Sounds like an interesting project. What is current draw of the Taurus vs CV fans. Do you have the capacity to handle the larger motor?

Looking forward to hearing more and see the pics :nice:

You mean the alt right...

The 165A Powermaster should do ok :p

No clue on the Vic's current draw.
I should be able to find the current draw for the Taurus fan though...
I'll see if it's out there...

EDIT:
That was an easy find...
The Taurus will draw 15A at low speed and 34A at high speed.

Hmmm... the Crown Vics didn't get electric fans until sometime after 1998 (MY2000 IIRC). I guess they mean that this fan will fit a '95 thru '97 CV.

The electric fan was introduced on the CV for improved cooling during prolonged idling that police cars are subject to. So it should have plenty of capacity for your application. Not sure if you'll have any clearance issues in a Fox Body since the CV has a larger engine bay.

Nope, the '95-'97 CV's had electric supplimental fans, P71's anyway, I even had a buddy with a '94 Grand Marquis that had an electric supplimental fan (his fan clutch went out and the electric fan kept the engine cool, but we changed the fan clutch that day) and as with others it had a engine mounted fan also. I believe '98 was the swap the electric only fan.

Actually, as far as mounting it in the factory shroud, that's what I did to my '73 Montego. I cut a slit in the top of the factory shroud and used 2 metal strips to attach the bottom of the fan to the shroud. I am now running a mark 8 fan blade and motor with this setup. Oh and for the controller, get one rated for 130A or get some high amperage relays, because when the fan turns on it momentarily pulls ~130A and is hard on standard relays. I am running a hayden adjustable controller that instead of hooking the fan wire to the fan, I wired it to 4- 30/40 amp Ford relays. I had the relays and some connectors, and I got a small project box from Radio Shack to lay the relays in. The project box is attached to the fan shroud. I tell you what, I've got a 351C bored .030 over to 357C and the fan keeps the temps right where it needs to be. Your shroud it may be a little different than mine, but you get the idea.

Good luck, Chris

Jason, check out what Derek (Dman) did with his fan mounting if you want. It looked pretty slick to me (his was a Taurus fan, but his method was a little unique as I recall :nice: ).

Wish I had my '95 P71 to go look at. I just don't remember an electric fan. That certainly doesn't mean one wasn't one. I just never had to mess with cooling system (or much else, ever) with that car. Of course if it was a police-only feature, it's not mentioned in any of the commercially available manuals.
