I have been thinking of this too, I was thinking off cutting the area out under the Ash Tray Door and fabbing something and moving the lighter onto the dash as a power port.
I was thinking about getting one of those Plug and Chug things, but after seeing the above pic, I can see that it would totally interfere with the use of the handbrake (not so much an issue on AOD cars, but on a T-5, you kinda need it daily).
I like mine so far. Cost me about $3. It's supposed to wedge in between your seats or between the seat and the console (worked perfect for that on my '94 Cougar I had), but no dice on the Foxes. So, instead, I just mounted it directly to the side of the console with a couple of screws. Works great, doesn't interfere with anything ... well, except for the glovebox, and that's only when you've got a drink sitting in the forward-most spot. (The junk spot between the cupholders is handy, too.)
I'm sure it probably looks tacky to a lot of folks, but ... phooey. It works, and it didn't cost me jack, so what the heck.

808 Gt thats a good idea if it could be nicely molded to fit. What car did you get the cup holder from? I bet it wouldnt be hard to mold a cup holder there. I like my idea though underneath the console where those pen slots are. If you want to use it you just flip back the console. Maybe a design like the 94-95 mustang where you open the console and flip out that little plastic cupholder.

hey... that cupholder you kids are talking about... i got one for last christmas...
ran out real quick and took a couple pics... and decided to whore a lil...
that thing is ****ing ugly!
that thing is ****ing ugly!
to each his own... it's comfortable... it's useful... and it's a cupholder...
i like it... and would buy another just like it if need be....
808 it would be nice if the lid for the ashtray was made to cover the cupholder then it would be perfect.
honestly the only thing that pisses me off with the ebrake-pass. seat thing is when you stop you have to either grab the ebrake sideways and pull slowly, or unload and put on ashtray, yank then reload console.
I like the idea behind the ashtray cut-out and placement of a cupholder pod thingy in there, but I'm wary of hacking up my console for something that *MIGHT* fit. (Sure, I could get crafty with some JB Weld and some interior paint, but if it doesn't fit at all, welllllll...) I might take that idea and give it a little reworking, myself. Gonna have to look around at the various universal cupholders on the market and see if anything looks right for it.
I've been thinking that if I were to relocate the ashtray outlet to somewhere else and fasten the ashtray door down into place (useless thing, anyway, I'm sure we can all agree), wouldn't one of those simple universal two-cup holders with the sliding adjusters lay right on top of the ashtray door pretty nicely? I mean, secure it with some Velcro or glue or screws or whatever, but it wouldn't necessarily interfere with the e-brake handle function ... well, but then if you had a drink or two in there, I guess you'd still have to reach over it to grab the handle. Crap. Thought I was onto something there. Never mind...
I'd use some of that space in the middle of the dash, if it weren't already occupied with a bunch of gauges (none of which I'm willing/able to move anywhere else at this point). There's really not a whole lot of options for optimal cupholder locations on Foxes, it seems...

As I mentioned earlier in this Thread this was the same idea I was working on and was just going to relocate the Lighter to the dash as a Power Port and then have the Cup holder in place of the ashtray, I like the fact that they can sink down a little as then they wont get in the way of shifting as it would being on top of the console.
Trouble is, you can only go so low before you hit the tranny tunnel, itself. That, and (now that I think about it) unless you insulate the heck out of it somehow, you're gonna get a lot of heat transfer into your drinks from the tranny. Hope you only plan on keeping coffee and cocoa in there ... or you don't mind urine-warm soda...
If only Ford had elected to, say, move the shifter back about four inches, and maybe flip-flopped the A/C controls into the radio's position, they could have easily planted a couple of nice cupholders right there. Again, same problem with drinks getting hot and all, but that'd be a pretty nice spot to have 'em, anyway.
I've tried the kind that clip onto your vents, and they suck. They're usually only sized for 12oz. cans, and even a full one of those usually is heavy enough to tilt the vent down and dump your beverage all over the place. However, if someone's crafty with a welder or something, and could maybe rig up a wire-frame of sorts to replace the center vents with a cupholder that would allow air to flow through it, you'd not only have a nice spot for 'em, but (assuming that you have working A/C) could keep your drinks cold, too.
Maybe I should just try gettin' handy and bending up some wire coathangers and see what I can make...

Yeah I know what you mean as the depth isnt much before it sits on the trans tunnel, I have felt the ash tray after driving and it doesnt get too warm and it conducts heat better than plastic would. There has to be a decent way to do it, sooner or later one of us will come up with something decent!
Maybe one of the plates that reorders the climate controls and radio and leaves a DIN size hole at the top so you can mount a DIN size cupholder?
I think in the back under the console would be the best it would just have to be molde in the console trim panel. Because like you guys said the cups will get in the way of the ebrake.
Adam you should draw up a design that shows the cup holder underneath the console so you would have to move the console in the rear position to use the cupholder. It would be molded in the console panel where the pen slots are.
