My firing order got F'd up. I let my g/f change em, do my oil spark plugs etc. because I was teachin her stuff. Anyway I went to put em back to 15426378 and it doesnt work. When it cranks it sounds bad and it's just wway off. It does go counterclock on the dist right? And I tried HO order and it's just as bad. The plug wires are all snug too. I've got a lopey 544/240 cam and a 600 carb that is 'touchy.' My motor came from an 87 F150. Is it possible that the distributor gets setup different? Thanks

Anthony

If it's a 302 non HO, the firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

5.0 HO is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 . That is also the firing order of a 351W. Good luck.

Also, F-150's were non HO motors. So your firing order would follow that. Find Number 1 on the cap (should be marked) and put them in order. This is the way the cylinders are layed out on a Ford 302...

Oops.. I see you have an aftermarket cam... so you need to go off that to have the correct firing order. If it's a 5.0 HO cam or a 351W cam, then use that firing order... If it's a 289/302 cam, use the non HO firing order.

thanks for the info but I already knew all that guys. The only thing I think could be the prob is maybe I went the clockwise around the dist. instead of counter. I know my firing orders so thats not a prob. Thanks anyway though. It just seems to still not run as smooth as it should.

Only two firing orders for 5.0 Ford engines.
HO & 351 use a different firing order from the non HO engines.
HO & 351W 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

Non HO 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

The camshaft determines the firing order in 5.0 engines. Pull the sparkplugs out of #1 & #3 cylinder. Mark the TDC mark on the balancer with white paint. Put your finger in #1 sparkplug hole. Crank the engine until you see marks start to line up and feel the air blowing past your finger. Put your finger in the #3 sparkplug hole. Crank the engine 90 * and if you feel pressure in the #3 cylinder, your firing order is the 351 & HO firing order, 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.

Do the test a couple of times to be sure. If it still makes compression in #3 cylinder 90 * after making compression in #1, it is defintely the HO firing order. If not, then it is the non- HO firing order, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

thanks, I tried that yesterday though and couldn't find my socket for the crank nut. I think it's 1 3/8.

It's 15/16th if it's the stock balancer bolt. If it's an ARP, it's a 5/8th 12 point or 6 point depending on which you bought.
