Cutting front springs: which side to cut?

K, installed struts, car sits higher for some stupid reason..no idea why..i don't really care..i just want my stance back.

I wanna cut like half a coil, which side do i cut on the front coils?

The car shouldn't sit higher after just struts, but anyways:

Front: cut the bottom of the spring.

Rear: cut the top of the spring.

If i cut the bottom half of the coil, then how can i get the end of the coil all the way where it needs to be? your saying i cut the LCA side of the coil, right?

I know the car isn't suppose to sit higher..but it does. I have no idea why

I'd make sure the spring is in the pocket where it should be and double check your isolators. Instead of cutting you might just take out the isolators on that side and use electrical tape to prevent the metal on metal noise..

the springs are right and there aren't any isolators installed.

Just tell me which side i cut, i don't need anyone trying to change my mind. stupid struts pissing me off

Front: cut the bottom of the spring.

Rear: cut the top of the spring.

Just what I said in my first post. Can't explain it much easier than that.

yea, the guys on the other forum were telling me diffrent.
You are correct though, the bottom is the right one to be cut, and my car has the stance i've always wanted now.

Anytime man. Say you cut the bottom of the rears, the coil spring enlarges as it goes up, so by cutting it, the spring wouldn't sit in the LCA. Cutting the top on the front will result in the same situation.

Blah blah blah, thats what everyone says. My car rides the same way it did before i cut the springs. I only cut half a coill of the front, and about 1 coil off the rear. BtW: i did invest in aftermarket springs.. Eibach sportlines. The sportlines make the rear of the New Edge look too high, i've seen it on other cars, and mine, and they look ok on 94-98 but they just look bad IMO on the 99-04. The front, i pulled the isolators and i was very happy, but for some crazy reason, when i put in my Tokico struts, the front end raised like .4" and i double checked install with a manual and everything today, and everything was installed right..so i said screw it, i'm cutting the springs up front a half coil..and i did.. and behold: I didn't die on the way home.
The ride quality is the same as before i cut the spring..crappy haha. but not any crappier, i need some rear shocks BAD.
Is it OK to use 87-93 shocks in the rear untill i can afford some more tokicos? i can get both rear shocks from a 87-93 brand new for like 40 bucks

I would double check the installation of your struts. I have never heard of a Mustang gaining height from installing struts.

I have the same setup as you and mine sits the same way. I will be cutting mine till I can get a k-member and coilovers. Any new pics.

Many cars have "dead coils" on the spring that really only change ride height. You can cut these off and it's fine.

But some cars do suffer from cutting springs. Look at any import you see bouncing up and down over bumps in the road.

How do you like working on cars for the military? Had a friend that severley discouraged me from doing something like that in the military..he told me some crazy stories about how they were dropping engines etc. etc. in tanks in hours and having them up and running ASAP working through the night..i dunno, seems like fun.

SonicStangGT: Your car got higher too? I hope this isn't an issue w/ Tokico shocks..either that or both of our stockers were bottomed out so bad that a new strut raised it to a proper height. If your car was anything like mine, cut exactly half a coil off..IT sat JUST like it did before it raised up, and cut both sides before you make a measurment. I cut one side, and i got pissed because the car didn't lower ANY! It didn't even lower to one side, then when i cut the other side, both sides slammed.

i loved doing it in the military. my last unit was on the ball and super efficient. we had a good group of guys and we all knew our stuff. whenever we got a new guy we made sure to get him trained up to our standards. we were always 3 months ahead of schedule on our maintenance schedules and at our worst we were at 95% operational status. as a matter of fact, i am getting ready to go back in because jobs are so bad here in orlando.

the thing about doing work in hours...most everything is designed with quick connects ect. we could do a full engine swap on a HMMWV in less than an hour and a half or our engine/trannys from our armored recovery vehicle we could get out in half an hour. lol, the long hours though, that goes with the job.

I read somewhere foxbody shocks work perfect for our cars (lowered) because they are slightly shorter to begin with, and using our stock ones when lowered will wear out faster.

I'm about to get fox body shocks in the back and see if i can get away with it instead of buying performance ones.

I don't mind long ours and stuff if i'm happy with what i'm doing. Will they send me to school or something? or will they go with my experience? ..because my experience doesn't involve dropping engines on an HMMWV
Also can i make it above the enlistment ranking working on cars? it's a 4 year degree to become an officer, right?

if you are active you only need 90 college credits to go to OCS, but they give you a certain amount of time to finish after you get your commission. if you get out then you need to get your degree before you go back in. as far as going to school, you will need to take the initiative and do it yourself. besides, they like to see that their people are self sufficient like that.
