Cutting Springs (Gasp!!!)

So I'm going to cut my springs. Does anyone know how many coils to get a 1 inch drop both in the front and in the rear. Also, where do I cut the springs. On top or on the bottom.

I would just wait and get a decent set of springs before I lowered it. You can get Ford Racing springs for $140.

+1 on just buying springs. Theyre not that expensive and youll have better ride quality that way.

a guy i know cut 1 coil off his springs on the front and it dropped the front 2". so i would guess half a coil. not sure about doing it at the top or bottom. he says it rides just like factory only lower. i see nothing wrong with doing this. not everyone wants to spend $200 on springs that are going to ride like a dump truck.

All I can say is for the love of God do not TORCH them.

One of the previous owners of my car thought that would be a GREAT idea and it REALLY made my car handle like dick.

Yes I searched. I was just double checking. I know the front spring gets cut at the bottom and the rear at the top. I hear 1.5 coils cut netted a 1 inch drop. But I wanted to see if any of you guys had done it. I'm in college and I can't afford 140 dollar springs. I can't stand the ride height. I spent all my money on the bullitt shocks and struts.

Agreed, but it looks like the price of FRPP springs went up to about $160.

You can cut them, and it will ride the same. Don't use a torch as stated. Reason: It heats up the spring and it looses its tension. Just get a grinder and cut them with that. I wouldn't cut 1.5 coils off. That thing will be slammed to the ground. Start with a little at a time. You might have to reinstall it a couple times, so it will be an all day project.

Why would someone want to cut their stock springs to make it lower to have the same soft ride! Plus the fact you will tamper with the dampning/rate of the spring when cutting it.Either with a torch,or cutting wheel,both forms of cutting will change the rate.
To me.....that is just asking for a whole new ball game of problems.I have the Eibach Sportlines in my GT now for 5 years,and they are stiff,and i sometimes bottom out on rebound going down the highway when i hit a "dip" in the road,i couldn't imagine what it would've done with stock "cut" springs!!!! .....Or even going over a speed bump "from hell" really slow it sometimes will bounce a little,and sure enough,my exhaust takes the beating,now imagine with stock "cut" springs.
In my opinion,when going lower,i would want it a tad stiffer for a less of a chance of damaging stuff on the under side of my GT on rebound.There is a reason why they designed lowering springs to be stiffer.....besides the handling part,so you don't lose control,and gain more control due to be to soft and to close to the ground.Aftermarket spring really aren't that expensive.
Just my opinion.

Cutting springs will change the spring rate and thus it changes the ride quality.

Do not cut them. Just spend some money for a decent ride quality. You can get springs anywhere from $160+(damn they did go up).

Check eBay for deals as well.
I got my Vogtlands from a dealer who was trying to rid his inventory and all for about the price of a xbox 360 game plus shipping. I was pleased with the quality and the ride quality now with those and some KYB's.

Good luck on cutting the stock springs! I think some people also use the fox body 4 cylinder front springs and then cut the rears. Most get 1"-1 1/2" drop.

Cut one coil, off the top.
And guys, isn't there enough responses that are stating "don't do it" - ok, ok, he get's it...and doesn't care...neither did I - I cut a set of Mach 1 springs (1/2 coil in the rear and 3/4 in the front) and it's a great stance and the ride is the same as with the OEM 4X4 look.

I wish. I checked and they are $159.95 I'm afraid I missed the $140 springs there. L.R.S jumped up to $169.95 Maybe elsewhere...
