Cutting Springs (Gasp!!!)

Nothing wrong with cutting springs if you are just going for the look. Cutting them actually increases the spring rate some also.

I put C springs in mine years back and still had to cut 1 coil off the rears. The instruction sheet that came with the FRPP springs even told where and how much to cut them.

A 4 1/2" grinder with a cuttoff wheel works good if you are careful.

I just cut 3/4 of a coil of my bullitt springs last week. Car rides even better than before!!!
I would start with 3/4 or 1 coil, do not go over 1 coil the first time, you can always cut more.......

Pay careful attention when you cut them. hopefully you wont end up with a lopsided stance.

I cut mine stockers and on smooth roads you wont notice a difference in ride quality, harsh bumps on the freeway will be alot harsher but it really doesnt bother me. I'm actually still on my stock shocks and struts (103k) which are pretty much shot but like i said, it doesnt really bother me... I plan on picking up some tokicos and some match springs eventually, but until then at least my car doesnt look like a 4x4

like others have said, start small, especially on the back ones, dont over cut. I had my moms old stock springs from her GT so if i over cut it was no big deal

Naturally the car will handle better as the center of gravity has been altered. As long as you use a cut off wheel and not a torch you will be fine. I have done this on a few of my stangs I owned in the past. Some springs just don't lower the "4x4" enough

i went the eibach pro kit 219 bucks with tax. and rides a lil rougher but thats because after market springs have a higher spring rate, for handling purposes. DONT cuttem, just buy some. 1 up on the frp springs for a 140 bucks, it says itll dropem an inch but theyll settle to about an inch and a half. mine were the 1.2 front and the 1.5 in the rear, so far theyre done settling, to about 2in. all the way around

I cut the one coil off front with a grinder when I had mine ( the flat "dead" coil hey call it) and 1 1/2 off my back. Looked great and ride changed very little. Was a pin in the ass and by the time you get a grinder and all, I have to say next time I will jsut buy springs! I ended up having to get CC plates on my 96 as well.

As stated cuting isn't the best way to go. It can be done effectively. A lot of guys cut springs on the classic Mustangs with great success. I would cut 1/2 a coil the first time and a 1/4 coil after that for fine tuning. Maybe I'm just too cautious but you can always make them shorter..... making them longer again, now that would be an interesting trick. If you are removing 1.5 or less coils it shouldn't effect the spring rate TOO much. Let us know how it turns out.

Take them out for a drive after you put them back in because they might settle a little bit after a drive around the block and you might end up cuting too much if you don't. Oh and as everyone has already said, use a cut-off wheel not a torch.

please im begging you dont cuttem, youll regret it, i think. but youll still have the sucky handling even after cutting them, after all theyre STOCK. for goodness sake man buy some.

CHECK THESE OUT.

FRPP C springs. Stangnet members get a 5% discount. C springs have dead coils so if you dont like the ride height you can cut them with out altering the rate.

Your stocker springs have a progressive rate, if you cut them the rate is altered. Some conditions you wont be able to tell, and others you will.

Its your car, do what you want. But the FRPP springs are the way to go if you are on a budget...
