Hello my name is nathan and im starting to do a restoration on a 1989 mustang, body is in the shop getting work and new paint so i am taking apart the motor to have cleaned, and machined as well as stroked to a 347 and i was looking at aftermarket heads and the question i have is the two choices are either stud or pedestal rockers, what is the difference, which is stock, which is better and can handle more HP and are they interchangable? in not how can i change them?

Stock heads have pedestal mount rockers. Stud mount rockers have a threaded stud installed in the head. They do not interchange. My opinion is that stud mount rockers are better. Stud mount rockers allow you to get aftermarket rocker arms, like crane roller rockers. Roller rockers have a needle bearing fulcrum that has less friction and may even give you a little extra power, pedestal mount rocker like the factory heads have a lot more friction.

What would I have to do in order to use the pedestal instead of the stud?

They do not interchange, unfortunately if you get stud mounted heads you will need to also buy stud mounted rockers and if you buy pedestal mounted heads the only option later on if you wanted to switch to a stud mounted rocker arm would be to pull the heads and take them to a machine shop and have them put the studs in so my advice is do some more research see which one you think will work better for your setup.

I wouldn't let rockers dictate my head choice. Select your heads first, and then pick the rockers that will work with them
