I am going to be putting together a truck (71 ford short bed 2wd) to do some towing with , I can get the heads redone for $360 out the door , would these heads be a good option matched up with a good towing cam with a performer RPM intake and 600 edelbrock carb , going to put a C6 with a small stall ......any suggestions ?????

How much weight are you gonna pull with it and how often?

302 really isn't a good towing engine. It's ok once and while, but not good in hills or for lots of weight.

once a week , towing a 16 ft trailer and a fox body that weighs 2700 lbs , I would change the engine but its a fresh engine already in the truck but the heads have a busted spring because my cousin tried putting a .512 lift cam in the motor when he owned it without doing anything to the heads and they are 78 granada heads which suck I dont wanna just put those back on , just trying to get a little more out of it , its not much hill pulling where im at so the 302 should do just fine , or atleast I hope it does

The D0OE are the 351W heads.. yes they will add a few ponies for towing the trailor!!
Pre unleaded gas.. the heads WILL need hard exhaust seats.. IF that is included in the "360 out the door".. then Hell yes!! FMC said there is a 32 HP bolt on a stock 302!! Towing.. set the cam in as close to the 100 ICL as you can ( Ie cam on 110 ICL set it in at 106 {4* advanced} or even 104 ICL { 6* advanced} it will ADD to the torque and youll see tons of torque from 0 to 4800 rpm!! and send us a pix of the tire smoking tow vechical WITH the trailor attached!!! Cool??

Just me........................

PS they will make MORE power if you remove the huge EGR bump {tube} in the exhaust.. !!

yes they will have hardened valve seats , I was gonna leave the intake side alone and port the exhaust side out a good bit since thats where they seem to be lacking .....the engine has cast flat tops in it by the way ...I just dont know about the carb and intake setup , it was already on the motor and I was thinking the 600 might be too much , it does have long tube headers already though

For that towing job, I think the 302 would be fine. :nice:

The 600 cfm carb would be ok IMO too. Just about any dual plane intake would be fine as well. I wouldn't do the Performer RPM or Weiand Stealth though. They are more performance targeted intakes. I'd look to a 4x4 type intake. Like the regular Performer or Holley Street Dominator or Weiand Action Plus .

What cam specs do you have (or want to run)?

I second the Thumper head idea. www.thumperoforangepark.com

the cam I was looking at is

dur @ .050 204/214 lift .448/.472

I can probably sell this intake and get a performer but I might see how it runs first ....

That cam will probably work well and if you already have an intake, if I were you, I'd just use it. What ever it is, it'll probably work just fine. What I said before, I was assuming you hadn't bought or didn't have an intake yet.

Rocking... Hey while the intake and heads are off... grab an intake gasket and "Blend" the intake side of the heads into it!! also do the intake manifold... a smooth transition from one to the other has a huge bennifit!! Cool??
